You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

Solutions
Solution 1: Enable Recent Files in Settings

- 4Settings → Privacy & security → General
- 5Turn ON "Let Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches"
- 6Open File Explorer → View → Options (or three dots → Options)
- 7General tab → Privacy section:
- 8Check ✓ "Show recently used files in Quick Access"
- 9Check ✓ "Show frequently used folders in Quick Access"
Solution 2: Clear and Rebuild Recent Items
- 1Clear current recent items:
- 2File Explorer → View → Options → General → Privacy → "Clear"
- 3Delete jump list cache:
- 4Navigate to: %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
- 5Delete all files in this folder
- 6Also: %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations
- 7Delete all files here too
- 8Restart File Explorer (Task Manager → restart Explorer)
- 9Open a few files — they should start appearing in Recent
Solution 3: Check Group Policy and Registry
- 1If on Pro/Enterprise: check Group Policy:
- 2gpedit.msc → User Configuration → Administrative Templates
- 3→ Start Menu and Taskbar → "Do not keep history of recently opened documents"
- 4Set to "Not Configured" or "Disabled"
- 5Also check: → "Remove recent items menu from Start Menu"
- 6Set to "Not Configured"
- 7Registry (all editions):
- 8HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
- 9Set "Start_TrackDocs" to 1 (DWORD)
- 10Restart PC
