Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Quick Access shows outdated recent files
  • New files don't appear in Quick Access recent list
  • Frequent folders haven't updated in days or weeks
  • Pinned folders disappear from Quick Access
  • Can't pin new items — right-click "Pin to Quick Access" does nothing
  • Quick Access section completely empty

Common Causes

  • Quick Access database file corrupted
  • File Explorer history tracking disabled
  • Privacy settings clearing recent file history
  • Quick Access cache file too large or corrupted
  • Group Policy disabling recent files tracking
  • Windows Search indexer not tracking file access

Solutions

Solution 1: Reset Quick Access Database

  1. 1Clear the Quick Access cache:
  2. 2Close all File Explorer windows
  3. 3Open CMD as Admin:
  4. 4del /f /q "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations\*"
  5. 5del /f /q "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations\*"
  6. 6These folders store Quick Access data
  7. 7Restart File Explorer:
  8. 8Task Manager → find "Windows Explorer" → Restart
  9. 9Open File Explorer — Quick Access should start fresh
  10. 10New files and folders will populate as you use them
  11. 11Pinned items will need to be re-pinned
  12. 12Right-click frequently used folders → Pin to Quick Access

Solution 2: Fix Privacy and History Settings

  1. 1Ensure Quick Access tracking is enabled:
  2. 2File Explorer → three dots (⋯) → Options
  3. 3Or: Control Panel → File Explorer Options
  4. 4General tab → Privacy section:
  5. 5Check "Show recently used files"
  6. 6Check "Show frequently used folders"
  7. 7Windows 11: also check "Show files from Office.com"
  8. 8Click "Clear" to reset current history
  9. 9Click Apply → OK
  10. 10Check Windows privacy settings:
  11. 11Settings → Privacy & security → General
  12. 12Ensure "Let Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches" is ON
  13. 13This feeds data to Quick Access as well

Solution 3: Fix Group Policy and Advanced Issues

  1. 1Check if Group Policy is blocking Quick Access:
  2. 2gpedit.msc → User Configuration
  3. 3→ Admin Templates → Windows Components → File Explorer
  4. 4Check "Turn off display of recent search entries in the File Explorer search box"
  5. 5Set to Not Configured
  6. 6Also check: "Do not keep history of recently opened documents"
  7. 7Set to Not Configured
  8. 8If Quick Access is completely broken:
  9. 9Create new user profile to test
  10. 10If it works in new profile: old profile data is corrupted
  11. 11To migrate: copy pinned items from working profile
  12. 12Registry for Quick Access settings:
  13. 13HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
  14. 14ShowRecent and ShowFrequent DWORD values should be 1
