Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Quick Access shows no recent files or frequent folders
  • Pinned folders disappeared from Quick Access
  • Quick Access section completely empty
  • Right-click "Pin to Quick Access" doesn't work
  • Quick Access showing old files that were deleted
  • File Explorer opens to blank Quick Access page

Common Causes

  • Quick Access cache corrupted
  • Recent files tracking disabled in privacy settings
  • File Explorer set to open to "This PC" instead of Quick Access
  • Temporary file database corrupted
  • Windows Update reset Quick Access settings
  • Group Policy disabling recent files tracking

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Recent Files Tracking

  1. 1Go to Settings > Personalization > Start
  2. 2Turn ON "Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer"
  3. 3Open File Explorer > three dots > Options
  4. 4Under Privacy section at the bottom:
  5. 5Check "Show recently used files in Quick access"
  6. 6Check "Show frequently used folders in Quick access"

Solution 2: Clear and Rebuild Quick Access Cache

  1. 1Open File Explorer and navigate to:
  2. 2%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
  3. 3Delete all files in this folder
  4. 4Also navigate to: %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations
  5. 5Delete all files there too
  6. 6Restart File Explorer — Quick Access will rebuild from scratch

Solution 3: Re-pin Folders to Quick Access

  1. 1Open File Explorer
  2. 2Navigate to a folder you want pinned
  3. 3Right-click the folder > "Pin to Quick access"
  4. 4Alternatively: drag the folder to the Quick Access section in the left panel
  5. 5To remove: right-click the pinned item > "Unpin from Quick access"
  6. 6To set File Explorer to open to Quick Access: Options > General > "Open File Explorer to: Quick access"
