How to Fix Clipboard History Not Clearing or Stuck Items on Windows

Windows Clipboard History won't clear? Pinned items stuck? Old clipboard entries not being removed? Clipboard data persisting after clear? Fix clipboard history management issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Clipboard History shows items after pressing "Clear all"
  • Pinned clipboard items cannot be removed
  • Old clipboard entries reappear after clearing
  • Clipboard History database growing too large
  • Sensitive data persisting in clipboard despite clearing
  • "Clear all" button in clipboard settings doesn't work

Common Causes

  • Clipboard History database file corrupted
  • Pinned items are protected from "Clear all" by design
  • Cloud clipboard syncing restoring cleared items
  • Clipboard service not properly processing clear requests
  • Third-party clipboard manager conflicting with Windows
  • Registry settings preventing clipboard history reset

Solutions

Solution 1: Properly Clear Clipboard History

  1. 1Win + V to open Clipboard History
  2. 2Click "Clear all" to remove unpinned items
  3. 3Note: Pinned items (📌) survive "Clear all" — unpin them first
  4. 4Click the "..." on each pinned item → "Unpin"
  5. 5Then click "Clear all" again
  6. 6Also: Settings → System → Clipboard → "Clear clipboard data" → Clear
  7. 7To clear current clipboard: copy a single space character
  8. 8Or: CMD: echo off | clip (clears current clipboard)

Solution 2: Reset Clipboard History Database

  1. 1If normal clearing doesn't work:
  2. 2Turn OFF Clipboard History: Settings → System → Clipboard → toggle OFF
  3. 3Navigate to: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Clipboard
  4. 4Delete all contents of this folder
  5. 5Restart PC
  6. 6Turn Clipboard History back ON
  7. 7History should now be empty
  8. 8If cloud sync is restoring items: also turn OFF "Sync across your devices"

Solution 3: Fix Clipboard Service

  1. 1If clipboard operations are broken:
  2. 2CMD as Admin:
  3. 3net stop cbdhsvc (Clipboard User Service)
  4. 4Wait 5 seconds
  5. 5net start cbdhsvc
  6. 6Uninstall third-party clipboard managers (ClipX, Ditto, etc.)
  7. 7These can conflict with Windows Clipboard History
  8. 8If still stuck: create new Windows user profile
  9. 9Settings → Accounts → Other users → Add account
  10. 10Test clipboard in new profile to isolate issue
