How to Fix Clipboard History Not Saving Items on Windows

Clipboard history (Win+V) not saving copied items? Clipboard history empty despite copying? Clipboard sync not working across devices? Pinned clipboard items disappearing? Fix Windows clipboard history issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Win+V shows empty clipboard history
  • Copied items don't appear in clipboard history
  • Clipboard history worked before but stopped saving
  • Pinned clipboard items disappear after restart
  • Clipboard sync between devices not working
  • Only the most recent copy shows (no history)

Common Causes

  • Clipboard history feature disabled in Settings
  • Group Policy blocking clipboard history
  • Clipboard service (cbdhsvc) not running
  • Microsoft account not signed in (needed for sync)
  • Clipboard history data corrupted
  • Privacy settings clearing clipboard on sign-out

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable and Configure Clipboard History

  1. 1Enable clipboard history:
  2. 2Settings → System → Clipboard
  3. 3Toggle ON "Clipboard history"
  4. 4Test: copy something → press Win+V
  5. 5You should see the clipboard panel with history
  6. 6For cross-device sync:
  7. 7Toggle ON "Sync across your devices"
  8. 8Choose "Automatically sync text that I copy" or "Manual"
  9. 9Requires Microsoft account signed in on all devices
  10. 10Check: Settings → Accounts → ensure Microsoft account is connected
  11. 11Note: clipboard history only saves text and images <4MB
  12. 12Files, folders, and large images are NOT saved to history

Solution 2: Fix Clipboard Service

  1. 1The clipboard history service may be stopped:
  2. 2services.msc → find "Clipboard User Service" (cbdhsvc)
  3. 3It should be Running with Automatic (Delayed) start
  4. 4If stopped: right-click → Start
  5. 5If it won't start:
  6. 6CMD as Admin:
  7. 7sc config cbdhsvc start= auto
  8. 8net start cbdhsvc
  9. 9Also check "Connected Devices Platform Service" (CDPSvc)
  10. 10This is needed for clipboard sync
  11. 11Should be Automatic (Delayed Start)
  12. 12Restart PC if services were stopped
  13. 13Test clipboard history again with Win+V

Solution 3: Fix Group Policy and Reset Clipboard Data

  1. 1Check if Group Policy is blocking clipboard:
  2. 2gpedit.msc → Computer Configuration
  3. 3→ Admin Templates → System → OS Policies
  4. 4"Allow Clipboard History" → set to Enabled or Not Configured
  5. 5"Allow Clipboard synchronization across devices" → Enabled or Not Configured
  6. 6Run: gpupdate /force
  7. 7If clipboard data is corrupted:
  8. 8Settings → System → Clipboard → click "Clear" under Clear clipboard data
  9. 9This clears all history and pinned items
  10. 10Toggle clipboard history OFF → restart PC → toggle ON
  11. 11Check privacy settings:
  12. 12Settings → Privacy & security → General
  13. 13Also: Settings → System → Clipboard
  14. 14Uncheck "Clear clipboard data when I sign out" if you want persistence
