Common Causes

  • Search highlights feature disabled in Settings or Group Policy
  • Windows Search service not running properly
  • Internet connection required but not available for highlights content
  • SafeSearch or content filtering blocking highlights

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Search Highlights in Settings

  1. 1Settings → Privacy & security → Search permissions
  2. 2Scroll down to "More settings"
  3. 3Toggle "Show search highlights" to ON
  4. 4If already on: toggle OFF, wait 10 seconds, toggle back ON
  5. 5Close Settings and click the search box on the taskbar
  6. 6Wait a moment for highlights to load (requires internet)
  7. 7If still blank: check your internet connection
  8. 8Search highlights pull content from Bing — a working connection is required

Solution 2: Check Group Policy and Registry

  1. 1Open gpedit.msc (Windows Pro/Enterprise)
  2. 2Navigate to: Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Search
  3. 3Find "Allow search highlights" — set to "Not Configured" or "Enabled"
  4. 4For Windows Home: open regedit as Admin
  5. 5Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SearchSettings
  6. 6Find "IsDynamicSearchBoxEnabled" — set value to 1
  7. 7If the key doesn't exist: create a DWORD (32-bit) with that name and set to 1
  8. 8Restart Explorer or restart the computer

Solution 3: Reset Windows Search

  1. 1Open PowerShell as Administrator
  2. 2Stop the search service: Stop-Service WSearch
  3. 3Delete the search index: Remove-Item "$env:ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb" -Force
  4. 4Restart the service: Start-Service WSearch
  5. 5The search index will rebuild (may take 15-30 minutes)
  6. 6Alternatively: Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows
  7. 7Click "Advanced Search Indexer Settings" → Advanced → Rebuild
  8. 8After rebuilding: click the search box and check for highlights
