Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Settings → Search → "Searching Windows" shows "Indexing is paused"
  • Windows Search returns no results or incomplete results
  • "Indexing speed is reduced due to user activity" message persists
  • Search index stuck at a percentage and won't complete
  • Start menu search not finding installed apps or files
  • Outlook search not working due to paused indexing

Common Causes

  • Windows Search service stopped or disabled
  • Low battery or power saver mode pausing indexing
  • Search index database corrupted
  • Disk space too low for index to build
  • Group Policy restricting search indexing
  • High system load continuously deferring indexing

Solutions

Solution 1: Restart Windows Search Service

  1. 1Win+R → services.msc
  2. 2Find "Windows Search" service
  3. 3Right-click → Restart
  4. 4If service is stopped: right-click → Properties
  5. 5Set "Startup type" to "Automatic (Delayed Start)"
  6. 6Click "Start" → OK
  7. 7Wait 15-30 minutes for indexing to resume
  8. 8Check: Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows → "Indexing status"

Solution 2: Rebuild Search Index

  1. 1Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows
  2. 2Scroll down → click "Advanced indexing options"
  3. 3Click "Advanced" button → "Rebuild" under Troubleshooting
  4. 4Click OK to confirm — this deletes and rebuilds the entire index
  5. 5Rebuilding can take hours depending on number of files
  6. 6Don't restart or shut down during rebuild
  7. 7Search will return partial results until rebuild completes

Solution 3: Fix Indexing Restrictions

  1. 1Check power settings: indexing pauses on battery
  2. 2Plug in AC adapter or disable battery saver
  3. 3Ensure at least 5GB free on C: drive for index storage
  4. 4Check Group Policy: gpedit.msc →
  5. 5Computer Config → Admin Templates → Windows Components → Search
  6. 6"Prevent indexing when running on battery power" → Disabled
  7. 7For persistent issues: CMD as Admin:
  8. 8sc config WSearch start= delayed-auto && sc start WSearch
