Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Clicking the notification icon in taskbar does nothing
  • Notification Center panel opens but is blank/empty
  • App notifications not showing up at all
  • Notification badges (numbers) stuck on taskbar icons
  • Sound plays for notifications but no visual popup appears
  • Notifications worked before but stopped after an update
  • Quick Settings panel (Win 11) won't open or is missing buttons

Common Causes

  • Windows Shell Experience Host crashed or corrupted
  • Focus Assist blocking all notifications
  • Notifications disabled for specific apps in Settings
  • Notification Center service or component not registered
  • Full screen or game mode suppressing notifications
  • Corrupted user profile notification settings
  • Third-party notification management app conflicting

Solutions

Solution 1: Check Notification Settings

  1. 1Settings → System → Notifications
  2. 2Ensure "Notifications" toggle is ON at the top
  3. 3Scroll down to per-app notification list
  4. 4Make sure desired apps have notifications enabled
  5. 5For each app: click to expand → check "Show notification banners"
  6. 6Also check: "Show notifications on the lock screen" if needed
  7. 7Ensure "Do not disturb" / Focus Assist is turned OFF

Solution 2: Restart Shell Experience Host

  1. 1Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
  2. 2Find "Windows Shell Experience Host" in processes
  3. 3Right-click → End Task
  4. 4It will restart automatically within a few seconds
  5. 5If it doesn't: open Run (Win+R) → ShellExperienceHost.exe
  6. 6Also restart "Windows Explorer" in Task Manager
  7. 7Test notifications by sending a test from Settings → Notifications

Solution 3: Re-register Notification Components

  1. 1Open PowerShell as Administrator
  2. 2Run: Get-AppxPackage *ShellExperienceHost* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
  3. 3Also run: Get-AppxPackage *Windows.Notifications* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
  4. 4Restart the computer
  5. 5This re-registers the notification system components
  6. 6Test by clicking the notification/calendar area in the taskbar

Solution 4: Clear Notification Database

  1. 1Open File Explorer → navigate to:
  2. 2%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Notifications
  3. 3Close all apps first
  4. 4Delete all files in this folder (wpndatabase.db and related files)
  5. 5Windows will recreate a fresh notification database
  6. 6Restart the computer
  7. 7Note: this clears all existing notifications — new ones will appear normally
