How to Fix Computer Freezing and Hanging

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Clicking the "^" (show hidden icons) arrow does nothing
  • Overflow menu opens but is empty despite hidden icons
  • System tray icons moved to overflow but can't be accessed
  • Overflow arrow disappeared from taskbar
  • Overflow menu flashes briefly then closes
  • Icons stuck in overflow — can't drag them back to taskbar

Common Causes

  • Windows Explorer shell crash affecting tray rendering
  • Taskbar settings for icon visibility misconfigured
  • System tray icon notification area corrupted
  • Third-party taskbar modification software conflicting
  • Windows shell component registration broken
  • Too many tray icons overwhelming the overflow area

Solutions

Solution 1: Fix System Tray Icon Settings

  1. 1Windows 11:
  2. 2Settings → Personalization → Taskbar
  3. 3Expand "Other system tray icons"
  4. 4Toggle ON icons you want visible on taskbar
  5. 5Toggle OFF icons to keep them in overflow
  6. 6Also check: "System tray icons" section above
  7. 7Windows 10:
  8. 8Settings → Personalization → Taskbar
  9. 9"Select which icons appear on the taskbar"
  10. 10Toggle ON/OFF as desired
  11. 11"Turn system icons on or off"
  12. 12Ensure needed icons are ON
  13. 13If settings show no icons at all:
  14. 14Registry fix needed — see solution 2

Solution 2: Reset System Tray Notification Area

  1. 1Reset the notification area icon cache:
  2. 2Close all apps to system tray
  3. 3Registry Editor (regedit):
  4. 4HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
  5. 5Delete the "IconStreams" value
  6. 6Delete the "PastIconsStream" value
  7. 7Restart Windows Explorer:
  8. 8Task Manager → find Windows Explorer → Restart
  9. 9This rebuilds the tray icon database
  10. 10Icons will reappear as apps run
  11. 11Some icons may need apps to be restarted
  12. 12If overflow arrow is missing:
  13. 13Check taskbar isn't in "always show all icons" mode:
  14. 14Settings → Personalization → Taskbar
  15. 15Ensure not all icons are toggled ON (leave some OFF for overflow)

Solution 3: Fix Shell Components and Explorer

  1. 1Re-register shell components:
  2. 2PowerShell as Admin:
  3. 3Get-Process explorer | Stop-Process -Force
  4. 4Wait 2 seconds — explorer auto-restarts
  5. 5If it doesn't: Task Manager → File → Run new task → explorer.exe
  6. 6For persistent overflow issues:
  7. 7CMD as Admin:
  8. 8sfc /scannow
  9. 9DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  10. 10Restart PC
  11. 11If third-party taskbar tools are installed:
  12. 12TaskbarX, StartAllBack, ExplorerPatcher, etc.
  13. 13These can break native overflow behavior
  14. 14Temporarily disable or uninstall → test
  15. 15For completely broken system tray:
  16. 16Create a new user account and test there
  17. 17If it works in new account: user profile is corrupted
  18. 18Migrate data to new profile
