How to Fix Do Not Disturb / Focus Assist Not Silencing Notifications on Windows

Do Not Disturb mode not blocking notifications? Focus Assist enabled but notifications still appearing? Priority notifications ignoring DND settings? Notifications popping up during presentations? Focus mode not working properly? Fix Do Not Disturb notification issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Notifications appear even with Do Not Disturb enabled
  • Focus Assist set to "Alarms only" but apps still notify
  • Priority notifications list being ignored
  • Notifications pop up during full-screen games or presentations
  • Do Not Disturb toggle seems to have no effect
  • Automatic rules (during these times) not activating

Common Causes

  • Apps using high-priority notification channels that bypass DND
  • Focus Assist automatic rules misconfigured
  • Group Policy overriding Focus Assist settings
  • App notification settings overriding system DND
  • Windows notification service not respecting Focus state
  • Third-party notification software bypassing system DND

Solutions

Solution 1: Configure Do Not Disturb Properly

  1. 1Windows 11:
  2. 2Settings → System → Notifications
  3. 3Toggle ON "Do not disturb"
  4. 4Click "Set priority notifications" to control exceptions
  5. 5Remove apps you don't want breaking through DND
  6. 6Under "Turn on do not disturb automatically":
  7. 7Set times, during presentations, gaming, etc.
  8. 8Windows 10 (Focus Assist):
  9. 9Settings → System → Focus assist
  10. 10Select "Alarms only" for strictest mode
  11. 11Or "Priority only" and customize the priority list
  12. 12Click "Customize your priority list"
  13. 13Remove apps that shouldn't break through
  14. 14Uncheck "Show calls" and "Show reminders" if not needed

Solution 2: Fix App-Level Notification Overrides

  1. 1Some apps bypass DND with urgent notifications:
  2. 2Settings → System → Notifications
  3. 3Scroll down to app list
  4. 4Click each noisy app → toggle OFF notifications entirely
  5. 5Or: keep enabled but set to "Private" (no banners)
  6. 6For specific apps:
  7. 7Uncheck "Show notification banners"
  8. 8Uncheck "Show notifications in notification center"
  9. 9Uncheck "Play a sound when a notification arrives"
  10. 10For browser notifications:
  11. 11Chrome: Settings → Privacy → Site Settings → Notifications
  12. 12Block all or manage per-site
  13. 13Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Notifications
  14. 14Third-party apps (Slack, Teams, Discord):
  15. 15Check their internal notification settings too
  16. 16Some have their own DND that overrides Windows

Solution 3: Fix Group Policy and Service Issues

  1. 1Check if Group Policy controls Focus Assist:
  2. 2gpedit.msc → User Configuration → Admin Templates
  3. 3→ Start Menu and Taskbar → Notifications
  4. 4"Turn off notification feature" → Not Configured
  5. 5"Set the time Quiet Hours begins/ends" → check settings
  6. 6Run: gpupdate /force
  7. 7If notifications service is bugged:
  8. 8Restart the notification service:
  9. 9PowerShell as Admin:
  10. 10Get-Process -Name "ShellExperienceHost" | Stop-Process -Force
  11. 11This restarts the shell notification handler
  12. 12For persistent issues:
  13. 13Create new Windows user account
  14. 14Test DND in new account
  15. 15If it works: your user profile notification settings are corrupted
  16. 16Export important data → switch to new profile
