Common Causes
- ⚠Related Windows services disabled (WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.)
- ⚠Quick Settings layout reset by a Windows Update
- ⚠Hardware not detected — no WiFi means no WiFi toggle
- ⚠Group Policy restricting Quick Settings access
- ⚠User accidentally removed buttons via edit mode
- ⚠Shell Experience Host crash affecting Quick Settings state
- ⚠Feature not available in your Windows edition
Solutions
Solution 1: Edit Quick Settings Layout
- 1Click the WiFi/Volume/Battery area in the taskbar to open Quick Settings
- 2Click the pencil (edit) icon at the bottom
- 3Click "Add" to see all available toggles
- 4Add back any missing buttons: WiFi, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, Night light, etc.
- 5Drag buttons to reorder them
- 6Click "Done" when finished
- 7If the pencil icon is missing: the panel may need repair (see below)
Solution 2: Fix Missing Hardware Toggles
- 1WiFi toggle missing: Check Device Manager → Network adapters — is your WiFi adapter listed?
- 2If not: the WiFi hardware isn't detected — install the driver from manufacturer's website
- 3Bluetooth toggle missing: Check Device Manager → Bluetooth — is the adapter present?
- 4Enable Bluetooth in Device Manager if it's disabled (right-click → Enable)
- 5Also check: Services → Bluetooth Support Service → set to Automatic → Start
- 6After fixing the underlying hardware: the toggle should reappear in Quick Settings
Solution 3: Reset Quick Settings Panel
- 1Open PowerShell as Administrator
- 2Re-register Shell Experience Host:
- 3Get-AppxPackage *ShellExperienceHost* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
- 4Also: Get-AppxPackage *StartMenuExperienceHost* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
- 5Restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager
- 6Open Quick Settings again and try editing the layout
Solution 4: Check Services for Greyed-Out Buttons
- 1Greyed-out buttons usually mean the underlying service is stopped:
- 2Open Services (services.msc)
- 3WiFi greyed out: check "WLAN AutoConfig" → Automatic → Start
- 4Bluetooth greyed out: check "Bluetooth Support Service" → Automatic → Start
- 5Focus/Do Not Disturb: check "Windows Push Notifications" → Automatic → Start
- 6Location greyed out: Settings → Privacy → Location → enable location services
- 7After starting services: restart Explorer or reboot
