Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Widgets board opens but shows only "Loading..." text
  • Widget cards appear but content is blank
  • Widgets board is completely blank — no cards at all
  • "Something went wrong" error in Widgets
  • Weather widget showing wrong location or no data
  • Widgets button missing from taskbar
  • Widgets load but are extremely slow or unresponsive

Common Causes

  • Microsoft account not signed in (Widgets require Microsoft account)
  • Web Experience Pack outdated or corrupted
  • Internet connectivity issue preventing widget content loading
  • Edge WebView2 Runtime missing or corrupted (Widgets use Edge under the hood)
  • Widgets feature disabled by Group Policy
  • Widget service process crashed
  • Proxy or firewall blocking Microsoft widget content servers

Solutions

Solution 1: Sign In with Microsoft Account

  1. 1Widgets require a Microsoft account — local accounts won't work:
  2. 2Settings → Accounts → Your info
  3. 3If it says "Local account": click "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead"
  4. 4Sign in with your Microsoft account (or create one)
  5. 5After signing in: open Widgets (Win+W) and wait 30 seconds for content to load
  6. 6If already signed in: try signing out and back in
  7. 7Check: Settings → Accounts → Email & accounts → make sure your Microsoft account is listed

Solution 2: Update Web Experience Pack

  1. 1Widgets are powered by the "Windows Web Experience Pack":
  2. 2Open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates
  3. 3Look for "Windows Web Experience Pack" in the update list
  4. 4If it's not updating: search for it in the Store and click Update
  5. 5Also update: "Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime" (required dependency)
  6. 6After updating both: restart the PC
  7. 7Open Widgets (Win+W) and test

Solution 3: Reset Widgets

  1. 1Kill the Widgets process and restart it:
  2. 2Task Manager → find "Widgets" or "Windows Widgets" → End task
  3. 3Wait 5 seconds → open Widgets again (Win+W)
  4. 4If still broken: Settings → Apps → Installed apps → search "Web Experience"
  5. 5Click three dots → Advanced options → Repair
  6. 6If Repair doesn't help: click Reset
  7. 7Nuclear option: uninstall and reinstall Web Experience Pack from Microsoft Store

Solution 4: Enable Widgets on Taskbar

  1. 1If the Widgets button is missing from the taskbar:
  2. 2Right-click taskbar → Taskbar settings
  3. 3Toggle "Widgets" to ON
  4. 4If the toggle is greyed out: Group Policy may be blocking it
  5. 5gpedit.msc → Computer Config → Admin Templates → Windows Components → Widgets
  6. 6"Allow Widgets" → set to Enabled or Not Configured
  7. 7After policy change: gpupdate /force → restart
