How to Fix Task View Timeline Not Showing Activities on Windows

Windows Timeline (Task View) not showing past activities? Activity history empty? Can't see previous documents or websites in Timeline? Timeline feature disappeared after update? Fix Timeline activity history issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Task View (Win+Tab) shows no activity history
  • Timeline section completely empty below virtual desktops
  • "See more activities" link missing from Task View
  • Activities from other devices not appearing
  • Timeline shows some days but missing recent activity
  • Timeline feature seems to have disappeared entirely

Common Causes

  • Activity history disabled in Settings
  • Timeline feature removed in Windows 11 (by design)
  • Microsoft account not linked for cross-device sync
  • Activity history collection turned off via Group Policy
  • Privacy settings blocking activity tracking
  • Windows 10 version too old to support Timeline (pre-1803)

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Activity History (Windows 10)

  1. 1Note: Timeline was REMOVED in Windows 11 — it only works in Windows 10
  2. 2In Windows 10:
  3. 3Settings → Privacy → Activity history
  4. 4Check: "Store my activity history on this device"
  5. 5Check: "Send my activity history to Microsoft"
  6. 6Select your Microsoft account under "Show activities from these accounts"
  7. 7Ensure all accounts are toggled ON
  8. 8Activity history takes time to populate — use your PC normally
  9. 9Activities should appear in Task View (Win+Tab) within a day

Solution 2: Windows 11 Alternative

  1. 1Microsoft removed Timeline from Windows 11
  2. 2Task View (Win+Tab) only shows open windows and virtual desktops
  3. 3Alternatives for activity tracking:
  4. 4Microsoft Edge: browse history shows recent web activity
  5. 5File Explorer: Quick Access shows recent files
  6. 6Office apps: Home → Recommended shows recent documents
  7. 7OneDrive: Recent files synced across devices
  8. 8Windows Search: type a file name to find recent documents
  9. 9Third-party tools like "Windows Timeline Support" may offer partial functionality
  10. 10ActivityWatch is an open-source activity tracker alternative

Solution 3: Fix Missing Activities (Windows 10)

  1. 1If Timeline is enabled but showing nothing:
  2. 2Check Group Policy isn't blocking it:
  3. 3gpedit.msc → Computer Configuration → Admin Templates
  4. 4→ System → OS Policies → "Allow publishing of User Activities" → Enabled
  5. 5→ "Allow upload of User Activities" → Enabled
  6. 6Clear and rebuild activity history:
  7. 7Settings → Privacy → Activity history → Clear activity history
  8. 8Wait 24 hours for new activities to populate
  9. 9Check that Connected User Experiences service is running:
  10. 10services.msc → "Connected User Experiences and Telemetry" → Running
  11. 11Also: "Connected Devices Platform Service" → Running
