How to Fix Clipboard Cloud Sync Not Working Between Devices on Windows

Windows clipboard cloud sync not syncing between PCs? Copied items not appearing on other devices? Cloud clipboard feature enabled but not transferring? Fix clipboard sync across devices.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Items copied on one PC don't appear on another
  • Clipboard history shows local items only, no synced items
  • Cloud clipboard enabled but "Sync across devices" not working
  • Clipboard sync works one direction but not the other
  • Synced clipboard items delayed by minutes or never arrive
  • "Can't sync right now" message in clipboard history

Common Causes

  • Clipboard sync not enabled in Settings on all devices
  • Not signed in with same Microsoft account on all devices
  • Microsoft account sync paused or restricted
  • Network or firewall blocking clipboard sync traffic
  • Clipboard data too large to sync (images, large text)
  • Windows version doesn't support cloud clipboard (pre-1809)

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Clipboard Sync on All Devices

  1. 1On EVERY device you want to sync:
  2. 2Settings → System → Clipboard
  3. 3Turn on "Clipboard history"
  4. 4Turn on "Sync across your devices"
  5. 5Choose: "Automatically sync text that I copy" (recommended)
  6. 6Or: "Never automatically sync text that I copy" (manual via Win+V)
  7. 7Verify same Microsoft account on all devices:
  8. 8Settings → Accounts → Your info — should show same account
  9. 9If different accounts: clipboard sync won't work between them

Solution 2: Fix Microsoft Account Sync

  1. 1Ensure account sync is not paused:
  2. 2Settings → Accounts → Windows backup
  3. 3Turn on "Remember my preferences"
  4. 4Check all sub-toggles are on
  5. 5If sync seems stuck:
  6. 6Sign out of Microsoft account → sign back in
  7. 7Settings → Accounts → Your info → "Sign in with local account instead"
  8. 8Restart → sign back in with Microsoft account
  9. 9This refreshes the sync connection
  10. 10Check internet connection on all devices
  11. 11Clipboard sync requires internet — no LAN-only option

Solution 3: Troubleshoot Sync Limitations

  1. 1Cloud clipboard has limitations:
  2. 2Only text under ~100KB syncs (no images via cloud sync)
  3. 3Images stay in local clipboard history only
  4. 4Clipboard history holds max 25 items
  5. 5Pinned items (up to 50) persist across restarts
  6. 6Sync requires Windows 10 v1809+ or Windows 11
  7. 7If firewall blocking:
  8. 8Ensure outbound HTTPS to Microsoft services is allowed
  9. 9Enterprise networks may block clipboard sync via Group Policy
  10. 10Check: Computer Configuration → Admin Templates → System → OS Policies
  11. 11Look for "Allow Clipboard synchronization across devices"
