Symptoms
You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:
- •Win+Tab does nothing or shows blank screen
- •Task View button missing from taskbar
- •Virtual desktops disappeared — all windows on one desktop
- •Can't create new virtual desktops
- •Switching desktops with Ctrl+Win+arrows doesn't work
- •Task View shows but timeline/activity history is empty
Common Causes
- ⚠Task View button hidden in taskbar settings
- ⚠Explorer.exe glitch preventing Task View from rendering
- ⚠Virtual desktop data corrupted
- ⚠Third-party software interfering with Task View hotkeys
- ⚠Windows animation effects disabled (Task View needs them)
- ⚠User profile corruption affecting desktop settings
Solutions
Solution 1: Enable Task View
- 1Right-click taskbar → Taskbar settings
- 2Turn ON "Task view" toggle (shows the button)
- 3Even without the button: Win+Tab should open Task View
- 4If Win+Tab doesn't work: check if keyboard shortcut is captured by another app
- 5Test: try three-finger swipe up on touchpad (also opens Task View)
- 6If that works but Win+Tab doesn't: keyboard shortcut is intercepted
Solution 2: Fix Virtual Desktops
- 1If virtual desktops disappeared:
- 2Win+Tab → click "New desktop" (+ button) at the top
- 3Move windows between desktops: Win+Tab → drag window to another desktop
- 4If desktops exist but windows are on wrong one:
- 5Right-click a window in Task View → "Move to" → select desktop
- 6Keyboard: Ctrl+Win+D (new desktop), Ctrl+Win+F4 (close current desktop)
- 7Ctrl+Win+Left/Right to switch between desktops
Solution 3: Fix Task View Not Rendering
- 1Restart Explorer: Task Manager → find "Windows Explorer" → Restart
- 2Check animation settings: Settings → Accessibility → Visual effects
- 3Turn ON "Animation effects" — Task View requires this
- 4Or: System Properties → Advanced → Performance Settings
- 5Check "Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing"
- 6If still broken: create a new user profile to test if it's profile-specific
- 7sfc /scannow and DISM /RestoreHealth as last resort
