How to Fix Alt+Tab Not Working or Not Switching Windows on Windows

Alt+Tab stopped working, not showing all windows, showing Edge tabs instead of apps, or task switcher not appearing? Fix Alt+Tab issues on Windows.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Alt+Tab does nothing — no task switcher appears
  • Alt+Tab shows but some windows are missing from the list
  • Alt+Tab shows Edge browser tabs instead of just app windows
  • Task switcher appears briefly then disappears
  • Alt+Tab switches but preview thumbnails are blank
  • Alt+Tab works but doesn't switch to the selected window

Common Causes

  • Windows 11 Alt+Tab settings including Edge tabs
  • Explorer.exe process glitch
  • Third-party software intercepting Alt+Tab (task switcher replacements)
  • Focus Assist preventing window switching
  • Registry settings for task switcher corrupted
  • Keyboard Alt key not registering (hardware or driver issue)

Solutions

Solution 1: Configure Alt+Tab Behavior

  1. 1To stop showing Edge tabs in Alt+Tab:
  2. 2Settings → System → Multitasking → Alt+Tab
  3. 3Change from "Open windows and all tabs in Edge" to "Open windows only"
  4. 4This gives you the classic Alt+Tab showing only application windows
  5. 5If you want some tabs: choose "Open windows and 3 most recent tabs"
  6. 6Restart Explorer after changing: Task Manager → Windows Explorer → Restart

Solution 2: Fix Alt+Tab Not Responding

  1. 1Quick fix: restart Windows Explorer:
  2. 2Ctrl+Shift+Esc → find "Windows Explorer" → Restart
  3. 3If that doesn't work: check keyboard
  4. 4Test Alt key: press Alt → does the menu bar in apps highlight?
  5. 5If not: try the other Alt key (left vs right)
  6. 6Check for third-party task switcher software that may intercept Alt+Tab
  7. 7Common: PowerToys FancyZones, AltDrag, etc.
  8. 8Disable them temporarily to test

Solution 3: Registry Fix for Alt+Tab

  1. 1If Alt+Tab completely broken:
  2. 2Regedit → HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
  3. 3Find "AltTabSettings" — if it exists and is set to 1: change to 0
  4. 4If it doesn't exist: create DWORD "AltTabSettings" = 0
  5. 5This ensures the modern Alt+Tab is used
  6. 6To force classic Alt+Tab (simple icons, no previews):
  7. 7Set "AltTabSettings" = 1
  8. 8Restart PC or restart Explorer for changes to take effect
