You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Lock screen appears but clicking or pressing keys does nothing
  • Lock screen shows spinning dots that never stop
  • Can see lock screen image but no password field appears
  • Password field appears but keyboard input doesn't register
  • Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't bring up login options

Common Causes

  • Windows shell (explorer.exe) crashed during login
  • Lock screen app or Spotlight image hanging the login process
  • User profile corrupted — login components can't load
  • Graphics driver causing display issues at lock screen
  • Fast Startup causing login components to not initialize

Solutions

Solution 1: Force Login Screen

  1. 1Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete — should bring up security options
