  • Task View (Win+Tab) doesn't show virtual desktop bar
  • Virtual desktops disappear after restart
  • Apps move between desktops on their own
  • Can't create new virtual desktops
  • Four-finger swipe on touchpad doesn't switch desktops

Common Causes

  • Task View disabled by Group Policy
  • Third-party virtual desktop software conflicting
  • Touchpad gesture settings changed or disabled
  • Explorer.exe not functioning properly
  • Windows shell components corrupted

Solutions

Solution 1: Fix Virtual Desktop Keyboard Shortcuts

  1. 1Default shortcuts:
  2. 2Win+Ctrl+D: Create new virtual desktop
  3. 3Win+Ctrl+Left/Right: Switch between desktops
  4. 4Win+Ctrl+F4: Close current virtual desktop
  5. 5Win+Tab: Open Task View
  6. 6If shortcuts don't work:
  7. 7Check for third-party apps that may capture these shortcuts
  8. 8AutoHotkey, PowerToys, gaming software may intercept
  9. 9Temporarily close these apps and test
  10. 10Check Group Policy: gpedit.msc
  11. 11User Config → Admin Templates → Desktop
  12. 12Ensure "Turn off virtual desktops" is Not Configured or Disabled

Solution 2: Fix Task View and Desktop Persistence

  1. 1If Task View doesn't show desktop bar:
  2. 2Right-click taskbar → ensure "Show Task View button" is enabled
  3. 3Or just press Win+Tab — button isn't required for functionality
  4. 4If desktops disappear after restart:
  5. 5This is by design on some Windows 10 versions
  6. 6Windows 11 preserves desktops across restarts by default
  7. 7Settings → System → Multitasking → Desktops
  8. 8Check "On the taskbar, show windows that are open on: All desktops"
  9. 9Also check: "Show windows on all desktops when I press Alt+Tab"
  10. 10To keep apps on specific desktops:
  11. 11Right-click app in Task View → Move to → Desktop X
  12. 12Or: Right-click → Show this window on all desktops

Solution 3: Fix Touchpad Gestures for Desktop Switching

  1. 1Four-finger swipe should switch virtual desktops:
  2. 2Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touchpad → Advanced gestures
  3. 3Or: Settings → Devices → Touchpad → Advanced gestures
  4. 4Set four-finger swipe left/right to "Switch desktops"
  5. 5Three-finger swipe can also be configured for this
  6. 6If touchpad gestures section is missing:
  7. 7Your touchpad may not support precision touchpad gestures
  8. 8Check: Settings → Touchpad → look for "Your PC has a precision touchpad"
  9. 9Update touchpad drivers from manufacturer website
  10. 10If still broken: restart Explorer:
  11. 11Ctrl+Shift+Esc → find "Windows Explorer" → Restart
  12. 12This refreshes the shell including virtual desktop features
