Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • No Snap Layout popup when hovering maximize button
  • Windows won't snap to screen edges
  • Snap assist suggestions not appearing
  • Snap only works with keyboard but not mouse
  • Snap Layouts option grayed out in Settings
  • Snapped windows don't resize together

Common Causes

  • Snap Layouts feature disabled in Settings
  • App not supporting Snap Layouts (some legacy apps)
  • Display scaling causing detection issues
  • Third-party window manager conflicting
  • Windows 11 version too old (Snap Layouts require 21H2+)
  • Maximize button detection zone too small

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Snap Layouts in Settings

  1. 1Go to Settings > System > Multitasking
  2. 2Turn on "Snap windows"
  3. 3Click the dropdown arrow to expand options
  4. 4Check "Show snap layouts when I hover over a window's maximize button"
  5. 5Check "Show snap layouts when I drag a window to the top of my screen"
  6. 6Check all other snap options for best experience

Solution 2: Use Keyboard Shortcuts Instead

  1. 1Win + Left Arrow: snap window to left half
  2. 2Win + Right Arrow: snap window to right half
  3. 3Win + Up Arrow: maximize window
  4. 4Win + Down Arrow: minimize/restore window
  5. 5Win + Z: open Snap Layouts flyout (Windows 11 22H2+)
  6. 6These work even when mouse-based snapping has issues

Solution 3: Check for Conflicting Software

  1. 1Close third-party window managers (PowerToys FancyZones, DisplayFusion, etc.)
  2. 2Test if Snap Layouts work now
  3. 3If they do, reconfigure the third-party tool to not override snap behavior
  4. 4For PowerToys FancyZones: disable "Override Windows Snap" in FancyZones settings
  5. 5Restart Explorer if needed (Ctrl+Shift+Esc > Restart Windows Explorer)
