Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Same lock screen image for days or weeks
  • Lock screen shows solid color instead of Spotlight image
  • Spotlight images download but don't display
  • "Like what you see?" link missing from lock screen
  • Lock screen reverts to default Windows image
  • Spotlight works sometimes but frequently gets stuck

Common Causes

  • Spotlight data cache corrupted
  • Spotlight assets folder full of old images
  • Metered connection preventing image downloads
  • Background apps setting disabled (Spotlight needs it)
  • Group Policy disabling Spotlight
  • Microsoft account not connected (some Spotlight features need it)

Solutions

Solution 1: Reset Spotlight Data

  1. 1Go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen
  2. 2Change "Personalize your lock screen" to "Picture" temporarily
  3. 3Open File Explorer and navigate to:
  4. 4%LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Assets
  5. 5Delete all files in this folder (these are cached Spotlight images)
  6. 6Change lock screen back to "Windows Spotlight" — fresh images will download

Solution 2: Re-register Spotlight

  1. 1Open PowerShell as Administrator
  2. 2Run: Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml" -Verbose}
  3. 3Restart your computer
  4. 4Go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen
  5. 5Ensure "Windows Spotlight" is selected
  6. 6Wait 15-30 minutes for new images to download

Solution 3: Enable Background Apps

  1. 1Spotlight needs background app permissions to download images
  2. 2Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
  3. 3Find "Windows Feature Experience Pack" or "Content Delivery Manager"
  4. 4Ensure background permissions are allowed
  5. 5Also check: Settings > Network > your network > Metered connection: OFF
  6. 6Spotlight won't download images on metered connections
