Solutions

Solution 1: Set Both App and System Mode to Dark

  1. 1Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors
  2. 2Under "Choose your mode" select "Dark"
  3. 3This sets BOTH Windows mode and app mode to dark
  4. 4Or select "Custom" to set them independently
  5. 5"Windows mode" = taskbar, Start menu, system UI
  6. 6"App mode" = File Explorer, Settings, Microsoft apps

Solution 2: Reset Theme to Defaults

  1. 1Go to Settings > Personalization > Themes
  2. 2Select "Windows (Dark)" or "Windows" default theme
  3. 3This clears any custom theme that might be overriding dark mode
  4. 4If no dark theme is listed: click "Browse themes" in Microsoft Store
  5. 5Download a default Windows dark theme

Solution 3: Fix via Registry

  1. 1Press Windows + R, type regedit
  2. 2Navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize
  3. 3Set "AppsUseLightTheme" to 0 (dark mode for apps)
  4. 4Set "SystemUsesLightTheme" to 0 (dark mode for system)
  5. 5Restart Windows Explorer (Task Manager > restart Explorer)
