How to Fix Screen Rotation Locked or Auto-Rotate Not Working on Windows

Screen won't rotate on tablet or 2-in-1, rotation lock greyed out, or auto-rotate not responding? Fix screen rotation on Windows.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Screen doesn't rotate when tablet is turned
  • Rotation lock toggle greyed out in Quick Settings
  • Auto-rotate stopped working after Windows Update
  • Screen stuck in portrait or landscape mode
  • Rotation works in tablet mode but not in laptop mode
  • Quick Settings doesn't show rotation lock button at all

How RescuePC unfreezes screen rotation when the orientation toggle stops responding

Screen rotation locks happen when the sensor service, the rotation registry policy, or a stuck graphics driver state stops the OS from sending orientation events. RescuePC inspects all three so the toggle in Quick Settings actually does something again.

  • Restarts the Sensor Monitoring Service (SensrSvc) and Sensor Data Service (SensorDataService)
  • Clears the AutoRotation registry policy that pins orientation in some OEM images
  • Reinstalls the Intel/AMD/NVIDIA display driver to refresh orientation handling
  • Re-registers the Quick Settings flyout so the rotation lock toggle responds again
  • Validates that GMS rotation events are flowing using event log signatures

Most useful when the Rotation Lock toggle is greyed out, when the screen no longer rotates after detaching a 2-in-1 keyboard, or when a recent driver update removed orientation support.

Common Causes

  • Rotation lock enabled (intentionally or accidentally)
  • Accelerometer/gyroscope driver missing or outdated
  • Sensor service not running
  • Device doesn't have rotation sensors (desktop monitors)
  • Tablet mode settings interfering
  • Third-party display software overriding rotation

Solutions

Solution 1: Check Rotation Lock

  1. 1Quick Settings (Win+A) → look for "Rotation lock" button
  2. 2If highlighted/active: click to disable the lock
  3. 3If greyed out: device may not support rotation or sensor is off
  4. 4Also check: Settings → System → Display → "Rotation lock" toggle
  5. 5For keyboards that flip: rotation only works when keyboard is folded back
  6. 6Detach keyboard if using a detachable — rotation should activate

Solution 2: Fix Sensor Driver

  1. 1Device Manager → Sensors → look for accelerometer/gyroscope
  2. 2If missing: View → Show hidden devices
  3. 3If showing error (yellow triangle): right-click → Update driver
  4. 4Or: right-click → Uninstall → restart (Windows will reinstall)
  5. 5Check manufacturer website for sensor drivers (Intel Sensor Hub is common)
  6. 6Also check: Device Manager → System devices → "HID Sensor Collection"

Solution 3: Restart Sensor Service

  1. 1services.msc → find "Sensor Monitoring Service"
  2. 2Set to Automatic → Start (or Restart if already running)
  3. 3Also check "Sensor Data Service" and "Sensor Service" — start all of them
  4. 4If services won't start: sfc /scannow and DISM /RestoreHealth
  5. 5Registry fix: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AutoRotation
  6. 6Set "Enable" = 1 (DWORD) and delete "SensorPresent" if it's 0
