Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Screen doesn't respond to any touch input
  • Touch works but is inaccurate (offset from finger)
  • Multi-touch gestures not working (pinch to zoom, etc.)
  • Touchscreen stopped working after update
  • Touch works intermittently — sometimes yes, sometimes no
  • "HID-compliant touch screen" missing from Device Manager

Common Causes

  • Touch screen driver disabled or corrupted
  • Touchscreen disabled in Device Manager
  • Screen calibration off
  • Protective screen cover interfering with touch
  • Windows Update replaced touch driver
  • Hardware flex cable loose (on older devices)

Solutions

Solution 1: Re-enable Touchscreen in Device Manager

  1. 1Open Device Manager
  2. 2Expand "Human Interface Devices"
  3. 3Look for "HID-compliant touch screen"
  4. 4If it has a down arrow: right-click > Enable device
  5. 5If not listed: click View > Show hidden devices
  6. 6If still missing: click Action > Scan for hardware changes

Solution 2: Reinstall Touch Driver

  1. 1In Device Manager, find "HID-compliant touch screen"
  2. 2Right-click > Uninstall device
  3. 3Check "Delete the driver software" if available
  4. 4Click Action > Scan for hardware changes
