How to Fix Windows Screensaver Not Activating or Missing on Windows

Screensaver not turning on after idle time, options greyed out in Settings, or screensaver settings missing? Fix screensaver issues on Windows 10 and 11.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Screensaver never activates even after long idle periods
  • Screensaver settings show "None" and can't be changed
  • Screensaver options greyed out in Personalization settings
  • "Screen saver settings" link missing from Lock screen settings
  • Screensaver activates but shows a black screen instead of the chosen saver
  • Screensaver worked before but stopped after a Windows Update
  • Preview button works but screensaver doesn't activate on idle

Common Causes

  • Screensaver set to "None" or "(None)" in settings
  • Mouse or input device sending micro-movements preventing idle detection
  • Power plan settings turning off display before screensaver wait time
  • Group Policy disabling screensaver settings
  • Presentation Mode or a media player preventing screensaver activation
  • Third-party software keeping the system "active" (e.g., caffeine utilities)
  • Corrupted screensaver .scr file or missing system screensavers

Solutions

Solution 1: Configure Screensaver Settings

  1. 1Right-click Desktop → Personalize → Lock screen
  2. 2Click "Screen saver" at the bottom (or search "screen saver" in Start)
  3. 3Select a screensaver from the dropdown (e.g., Bubbles, Mystify, Photos)
  4. 4Set "Wait" time (e.g., 5 or 10 minutes)
  5. 5Check "On resume, display logon screen" for security
  6. 6Click Preview to verify it works → move mouse to exit preview
  7. 7Click Apply → OK

Solution 2: Check for Input Devices Preventing Idle

  1. 1Some mice, gamepads, or drawing tablets send tiny movements
  2. 2Unplug USB devices one at a time and wait for the screensaver to activate
  3. 3Wireless mice on reflective surfaces can cause phantom movements
  4. 4Gaming mice with high polling rates may keep the system "active"
  5. 5Check: Device Manager → Mice → Properties → Power Management
  6. 6Also check if any gamepad/controller is plugged in with a drifting stick

Solution 3: Fix Power Plan Conflict

  1. 1If "Turn off display" is set to LESS time than the screensaver wait:
  2. 2The display turns off before the screensaver can start
  3. 3Open Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings
  4. 4Set "Turn off the display" to a higher value than your screensaver wait time
  5. 5Example: Screensaver = 10 min, Display off = 15 min
  6. 6Or set "Turn off the display" to Never and let the screensaver handle it

Solution 4: Check Group Policy and Registry

  1. 1Press Win+R → gpedit.msc → Enter (Pro/Enterprise only)
  2. 2Navigate to: User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Control Panel → Personalization
  3. 3Check: "Enable screen saver" → set to Enabled or Not Configured
  4. 4Check: "Screen saver timeout" → Not Configured (lets user set it)
  5. 5Check: "Force specific screen saver" → Not Configured
  6. 6For Home edition: check registry at HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop
  7. 7Ensure "ScreenSaveActive" = 1 and "SCRNSAVE.EXE" has a valid .scr path
