How to Fix Black Screen on Startup

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Screen brightness doesn't change when moving between light and dark rooms
  • Auto brightness setting is enabled but has no effect
  • Brightness stuck at one level — manual adjustment works but auto doesn't
  • Brightness changes randomly or too aggressively
  • Adaptive brightness option missing from Settings
  • Auto brightness worked before but stopped after a driver update

Common Causes

  • Ambient light sensor disabled or not present on the device
  • Adaptive brightness disabled in power plan settings
  • Display driver not supporting ambient light sensor integration
  • Light sensor hardware failing or obstructed
  • Intel Display Power Saving Technology conflicting with auto brightness
  • Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC) causing unexpected behavior

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Adaptive Brightness

  1. 1Settings → System → Display → Brightness
  2. 2Check "Change brightness automatically when lighting changes" (Win 11)
  3. 3Or: check "Change brightness based on content" and "Help improve battery"
  4. 4If the option is missing, your device may not have a light sensor
  5. 5Also check Power Options:
  6. 6Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced
  7. 7Display → Enable adaptive brightness → set to On for battery and plugged in
  8. 8Click Apply → OK

Solution 2: Fix Light Sensor and Drivers

  1. 1Check if your device has a light sensor:
  2. 2Device Manager → Sensors → look for "Ambient Light Sensor" or "HID Sensor Collection"
  3. 3If it shows a yellow triangle: right-click → Update driver
  4. 4If it's missing: your device may not support auto brightness
  5. 5For Intel graphics: open Intel Graphics Command Center
  6. 6Disable "Display Power Saving Technology" — it conflicts with auto brightness
  7. 7Also disable "Panel Self-Refresh" if experiencing flickering
  8. 8Update your display driver from the manufacturer's website

Solution 3: Calibrate or Disable Unwanted Behavior

  1. 1If brightness changes too aggressively or randomly:
  2. 2Disable Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC):
  3. 3Intel Graphics → Display → disable power savings features
  4. 4For NVIDIA: NVIDIA Control Panel → Display → disable dynamic range
  5. 5If you want to disable auto brightness entirely:
  6. 6Settings → System → Display → uncheck all auto brightness options
  7. 7Power Options → Display → Enable adaptive brightness → Off
  8. 8After disabling: set your preferred brightness manually with the slider
