Solutions
Solution 1: Install Proper Display Driver
- 1Open Device Manager → Display adapters
- 2Check if it says "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter"
- 3If so: you need the proper GPU driver
- 4For Intel: download from intel.com/download-center
- 5For NVIDIA: download from nvidia.com/drivers
- 6For AMD: download from amd.com/support
- 7Install the driver and restart
- 8Also check: Device Manager → Monitors → Generic PnP Monitor
- 9Right-click → Update driver → Search automatically
Solution 2: Disable Adaptive Brightness
- 1Open Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Power Options
- 2Click "Change plan settings" next to your active power plan
- 3Click "Change advanced power settings"
- 4Expand "Display" → "Enable adaptive brightness"
- 5Set both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to OFF
- 6Click Apply → OK
- 7Also check: Settings → System → Display
- 8Look for "Change brightness automatically when lighting changes" and turn it OFF
Solution 3: Reset Display Driver via Registry
- 1If brightness still won't change after updating drivers:
- 2Open Registry Editor (regedit) as Administrator
- 3Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000
- 4Look for "FeatureTestControl" — note the current value
- 5Change the value to f008 (hex)
- 6Restart the computer
- 7Brightness control should now work
- 8If it doesn't: revert the registry value and try reinstalling the GPU driver using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller)
