Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Brightness slider grayed out in Settings
  • Fn + brightness keys do nothing
  • Brightness changes don't take effect
  • Screen stays at max or min brightness
  • Brightness resets after restart
  • Adaptive brightness keeps changing on its own

Common Causes

  • Generic display driver installed instead of proper GPU driver
  • Monitor driver not supporting brightness control
  • Adaptive brightness enabled unexpectedly
  • Power plan overriding brightness settings
  • Fn key hotkey driver not installed
  • External monitors don't support software brightness control

Solutions

Solution 1: Install Proper Display Driver

  1. 1Open Device Manager
  2. 2Expand "Display adapters"
  3. 3If it shows "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" — that's the problem
  4. 4Right-click > Update driver > Search automatically
  5. 5Better: download from your laptop manufacturer's website
  6. 6After installing, brightness slider should appear

Solution 2: Disable Adaptive Brightness

  1. 1Open Control Panel > Power Options
  2. 2Click "Change plan settings" on your active plan
  3. 3Click "Change advanced power settings"
  4. 4Expand Display > Enable adaptive brightness
  5. 5Set both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to Off
  6. 6Click Apply and OK

Solution 3: Enable Monitor Driver for Brightness

  1. 1Open Device Manager
  2. 2Expand "Monitors"
  3. 3If it shows "Generic PnP Monitor", right-click > Update driver
  4. 4Choose "Browse my computer" > "Let me pick from a list"
  5. 5Select "Generic PnP Monitor" and click Next
  6. 6Restart — this re-registers the monitor with brightness support
  7. 7For external monitors: use the monitor's physical buttons instead
