Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix Driver Issues

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Brightness slider in Action Center is grayed out
  • Fn+brightness keys don't change brightness
  • Screen stuck at maximum or minimum brightness
  • Brightness changes but reverts after a second
  • Settings > Display shows no brightness slider
  • Brightness adjustable in BIOS but not in Windows

Common Causes

  • Display driver not properly installed (generic driver)
  • Monitor driver missing (PnP Monitor vs specific driver)
  • Adaptive brightness conflicting with manual control
  • Windows Update replaced display driver
  • BIOS/UEFI brightness override
  • External monitors don't support software brightness control

Solutions

Solution 1: Update Display Driver

  1. 1The #1 cause: generic display driver instead of manufacturer driver
  2. 2Open Device Manager > Display adapters
  3. 3Right-click your GPU > Update driver > Search automatically
  4. 4If that doesn't work: download the driver from Intel/NVIDIA/AMD website
  5. 5Also check: Device Manager > Monitors > "Generic PnP Monitor"
  6. 6Update the monitor driver — this often restores the brightness slider

Solution 2: Re-enable Monitor Driver

  1. 1Open Device Manager > Monitors
  2. 2If you see "Generic PnP Monitor": right-click > Enable device
  3. 3If already enabled: right-click > Uninstall device
  4. 4Click Action > Scan for hardware changes
  5. 5Windows will reinstall the monitor driver
  6. 6The brightness slider should reappear in Settings

Solution 3: Disable Adaptive Brightness

  1. 1Open Control Panel > Power Options
  2. 2Click "Change plan settings" for your active plan
  3. 3Click "Change advanced power settings"
  4. 4Expand Display > Enable adaptive brightness
  5. 5Set to "Off" for both On battery and Plugged in
  6. 6Click Apply — this prevents Windows from overriding your brightness setting
