How to Fix Can't Reset Windows Hello PIN on Windows

Windows Hello PIN reset failing, "Something went wrong" during PIN setup, or PIN option grayed out? Fix PIN creation and reset issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • "Something went wrong" when trying to set or reset PIN
  • "We can't set up your PIN" error
  • PIN option grayed out in Settings
  • "Your PIN is no longer available" after update
  • PIN reset loop — keeps asking to reset but fails
  • "This option is currently unavailable" for PIN

Common Causes

  • NGC (Next Generation Credential) folder corrupted
  • TPM (Trusted Platform Module) not functioning
  • Microsoft account sign-in required but not connected
  • Group Policy blocking PIN sign-in
  • Cryptographic services not running
  • Windows Update broke PIN infrastructure

Solutions

Solution 1: Delete NGC Folder and Re-create PIN

  1. 1Sign in with your password instead of PIN
  2. 2Open File Explorer and navigate to:
  3. 3C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Ngc
  4. 4You'll need to take ownership of this folder first
  5. 5Right-click Ngc > Properties > Security > Advanced > Change owner to your user
  6. 6Delete all contents inside the Ngc folder, then restart
  7. 7Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > PIN > Set up and create a new PIN

Solution 2: Fix TPM Issues

  1. 1Press Windows + R, type tpm.msc
  2. 2Check if TPM shows "The TPM is ready for use"
  3. 3If not: try "Clear TPM" (this resets security keys — you'll need to re-create PIN)
  4. 4After clearing: restart and set up PIN again
  5. 5If TPM isn't detected: check BIOS for TPM/Security settings
  6. 6Ensure "TPM 2.0" or "Security Device" is enabled in BIOS

Solution 3: Reset via Cryptographic Services

  1. 1Press Windows + R, type services.msc
  2. 2Find "Cryptographic Services" > right-click > Restart
  3. 3Also restart: "Windows Biometric Service"
  4. 4Also restart: "Credential Manager"
  5. 5Try setting up your PIN again after restarting these services
  6. 6If still failing: run sfc /scannow in Admin Command Prompt to repair system files
