How to Fix Windows PIN Login Not Available — "Something Went Wrong" on Windows

Can't set up Windows Hello PIN, PIN option grayed out, or getting "Something went wrong" when trying to sign in with PIN? Fix Windows PIN login issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • "Something went wrong and your PIN isn't available" at login
  • PIN option not showing on login screen
  • Can't set up new PIN — "Something happened and we can't set your PIN"
  • PIN works sometimes but not always
  • "This sign-in option is disabled" for PIN
  • After Windows Update, PIN stopped working

Common Causes

  • Ngc folder (PIN data container) corrupted
  • TPM (Trusted Platform Module) issues
  • Windows Hello PIN credential provider disabled
  • Group Policy blocking PIN sign-in
  • Microsoft account authentication issue
  • Corrupt user profile PIN data after update

Solutions

Solution 1: Reset PIN from Lock Screen

  1. 1At the login screen: click "I forgot my PIN"
  2. 2Sign in with your Microsoft account password instead
  3. 3Follow the prompts to set a new PIN
  4. 4If you can't reach the reset option:
  5. 5Sign in with password (click "Sign-in options" → key icon)
  6. 6Once logged in: Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → PIN
  7. 7Click "I forgot my PIN" or Remove → then Add a new PIN

Solution 2: Delete NGC Folder (Reset PIN Data)

  1. 1Sign in with password first
  2. 2Navigate to: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft
  3. 3You need to take ownership of the Ngc folder:
  4. 4Right-click Ngc → Properties → Security → Advanced → Change owner
  5. 5Set owner to your user account → check "Replace owner on sub containers"
  6. 6Now delete the entire Ngc folder contents (or rename the folder)
  7. 7Restart PC → go to Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options
  8. 8Set up a new PIN — Windows will recreate the Ngc folder

Solution 3: Fix TPM Issues

  1. 1PIN requires TPM — check if it's working:
  2. 2Win+R → tpm.msc → check TPM status
  3. 3Should say "The TPM is ready for use" with version 2.0
  4. 4If TPM is not found or has errors:
  5. 5BIOS/UEFI → Security settings → Enable TPM / PTT / fTPM
  6. 6After enabling: restart → try setting up PIN again
  7. 7If TPM shows errors: try clearing TPM (WARNING: may affect BitLocker)
  8. 8tpm.msc → Action → Clear TPM → restart → set up PIN
