How to Fix Windows Account Locked Out on Windows

Locked out of your Windows account, forgot password, or PIN not working? Fix local account lockouts, password resets, and Microsoft account recovery.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • "The referenced account is currently locked out" message
  • Forgot local account password
  • PIN stopped working after update
  • Microsoft account password not accepted
  • "That password is incorrect" but you're sure it's right
  • Account locked after too many failed attempts

Common Causes

  • Too many incorrect password attempts triggered lockout
  • Account lockout policy set to lock after X failed attempts
  • Password changed on another device (Microsoft account)
  • Windows Hello PIN data corrupted after update
  • Caps Lock on or keyboard language changed
  • Local account password forgotten with no reset disk

Solutions

Solution 1: Wait for Account Lockout to Expire

  1. 1If you see "account is locked out" — wait 30 minutes by default
  2. 2The lockout duration is set by the account lockout policy
  3. 3Do NOT keep trying passwords — each attempt may reset the timer
  4. 4After the lockout expires, try your correct password carefully
  5. 5Check Caps Lock and keyboard language before typing

Solution 2: Reset Microsoft Account Password

  1. 1On another device, go to account.live.com/password/reset
  2. 2Enter your Microsoft account email
  3. 3Verify via email, phone, or authenticator app
  4. 4Create a new password
  5. 5On your locked PC: connect to internet (click WiFi icon on lock screen)
  6. 6Enter the new password — Windows will sync it

Solution 3: Reset Local Account Password

  1. 1On the login screen, click "Reset password"
  2. 2Answer your security questions (set during account creation)
  3. 3If no security questions were set: you need a password reset disk
  4. 4If neither option is available: boot from Windows installation media
  5. 5Use Command Prompt in recovery: net user [username] [newpassword]
  6. 6This requires Windows installation USB — create one on another PC
