How to Fix Focus Assist / Do Not Disturb Rules Not Applying on Windows

Focus Assist automatic rules not activating? Do Not Disturb scheduled times being ignored? Priority notifications still coming through when Focus Assist is on? Focus sessions not suppressing notifications? Fix Focus Assist rule issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Focus Assist automatic rules (time-based, gaming, etc.) not triggering
  • Scheduled quiet hours being ignored — notifications still appear
  • Priority list not filtering correctly — blocked apps still notify
  • Focus Assist shows enabled but notifications still come through
  • Gaming mode not automatically activating Focus Assist
  • Duplicate displays rule not working during presentations

Common Causes

  • Automatic rules disabled individually in Settings
  • Windows version using new "Do Not Disturb" instead of Focus Assist
  • Priority notification list not configured correctly
  • Group Policy overriding local Focus Assist settings
  • Notification settings per-app overriding Focus Assist
  • Windows Focus feature (Windows 11 22H2+) replacing Focus Assist

Solutions

Solution 1: Configure Focus Assist Rules Correctly

  1. 1Settings → System → Focus assist (Win10) or Notifications (Win11)
  2. 2Windows 10: Check "Automatic rules" section:
  3. 3Enable rules you want: During these times, When duplicating display, When playing a game
  4. 4Set each rule to "Priority only" or "Alarms only"
  5. 5Windows 11 22H2+: Focus Assist replaced by "Do Not Disturb":
  6. 6Settings → System → Notifications → "Turn on do not disturb automatically"
  7. 7Set schedule and rules here instead
  8. 8Also configure: "Set priority notifications"
  9. 9Add apps that should ALWAYS notify to the priority list
  10. 10Remove apps that should be silenced

Solution 2: Fix Priority Notification List

  1. 1If certain apps still notify during Focus Assist:
  2. 2Settings → System → Focus assist → Priority list (Win10)
  3. 3Or: Settings → System → Notifications → Set priority notifications (Win11)
  4. 4Review the list of priority apps:
  5. 5Remove any app that shouldn't bypass Focus Assist
  6. 6Calls, reminders, and alarms bypass Focus Assist by default
  7. 7Per-app notification settings can also override:
  8. 8Settings → System → Notifications → scroll to app list
  9. 9Check individual app notification priorities
  10. 10"High" priority apps may bypass Do Not Disturb
  11. 11Set unwanted apps to "Normal" priority

Solution 3: Fix Focus Sessions (Windows 11)

  1. 1Windows 11 introduced Focus Sessions with Clock app:
  2. 2Open Clock app → Focus Sessions
  3. 3Set session duration and start a focus session
  4. 4This activates Do Not Disturb automatically
  5. 5If Focus Sessions not working:
  6. 6Ensure Clock app is up to date (Microsoft Store → Updates)
  7. 7Ensure "Do Not Disturb" integration is enabled:
  8. 8Settings → System → Notifications → Focus
  9. 9Check "Turn on do not disturb during focus sessions"
  10. 10If Group Policy blocking: contact IT administrator
  11. 11gpedit.msc → User Config → Admin Templates → Start Menu and Taskbar
  12. 12Check for "Quiet Hours" policies that may conflict
