How to Fix Slow Computer

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Programs in Startup folder don't launch at login
  • Task Manager shows startup items as enabled but they don't run
  • Startup programs take 5-10 minutes to finally appear
  • Some startup programs work but others don't
  • Programs added to Startup folder still don't auto-start
  • Startup apps worked before but stopped after an update

Common Causes

  • Startup app is disabled in Task Manager → Startup tab
  • Program shortcut in Startup folder is broken or points to wrong path
  • Windows startup delay feature intentionally delays non-essential apps
  • UAC blocking programs that need admin privileges at startup
  • Fast Startup causing issues with startup programs
  • Group Policy or organization restricting startup programs

Solutions

Solution 1: Check Startup Settings

  1. 1Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → Startup tab (or Startup apps)
  2. 2Ensure your program shows "Enabled" status
  3. 3If disabled: right-click → Enable
  4. 4Also check: Settings → Apps → Startup → toggle programs ON
  5. 5Both locations control startup — check both
  6. 6If the program isn't listed in either place: add it manually

Solution 2: Add Programs to Startup Manually

  1. 1Win+R → shell:startup → Enter (opens your Startup folder)
  2. 2Create a shortcut to the program's .exe in this folder
  3. 3Right-click in folder → New → Shortcut → browse to program
  4. 4For ALL users: Win+R → shell:common startup
  5. 5Alternative: use Task Scheduler for more control
  6. 6Task Scheduler → Create Basic Task → trigger "At log on" → action "Start a program"
  7. 7Task Scheduler is better for programs needing admin rights

Solution 3: Fix Delayed Startup

  1. 1Windows 10/11 intentionally delays startup programs to speed up login
  2. 2Default delay: up to 10 seconds, sometimes more
  3. 3To reduce delay: Registry Editor (regedit)
  4. 4Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Serialize
  5. 5Create DWORD: "StartupDelayInMSec" = 0
  6. 6If "Serialize" key doesn't exist: create it
  7. 7Restart and test — programs should launch faster
