How to Fix Driver Issues

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Screen flickers or flashes constantly after installing a Windows update
  • Display goes black for 1-2 seconds repeatedly
  • Taskbar and desktop flicker but apps remain stable (or vice versa)
  • Screen flickering only happens after logging in — boot screen is fine
  • Flickering started immediately after a specific Windows Update
  • External monitor flickering but laptop screen is fine (or vice versa)

Common Causes

  • Windows Update installed an incompatible display driver
  • Display driver conflict between Windows generic driver and manufacturer driver
  • Incompatible app (antivirus, overlay software) conflicting with new update
  • Refresh rate changed to an unsupported value after update
  • Hardware acceleration settings changed during update
  • DWM (Desktop Window Manager) crashing due to driver incompatibility

Solutions

Solution 1: Determine If the Issue Is Driver or App Related

  1. 1Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager
  2. 2If Task Manager flickers too → likely a display driver issue
  3. 3If Task Manager does NOT flicker → likely an app compatibility issue
  4. 4For app issues:
  5. 5Boot into Safe Mode and uninstall recently updated apps
  6. 6Common culprits: Norton, iCloud, IDT Audio
  7. 7For driver issues:
  8. 8Continue to the next solution to roll back or update the display driver

Solution 2: Roll Back or Update Display Driver

  1. 1Open Device Manager → expand Display adapters
  2. 2Right-click your GPU → Properties → Driver tab
  3. 3Click "Roll Back Driver" if available — this reverts to the pre-update driver
  4. 4If Roll Back is greyed out:
  5. 5Right-click GPU → Uninstall device → check "Delete the driver software"
  6. 6Restart — Windows will install a generic driver
  7. 7Then download the latest driver from:
  8. 8NVIDIA: nvidia.com/drivers | AMD: amd.com/support | Intel: intel.com/download-center

Solution 3: Uninstall the Problematic Update

  1. 1If the flickering started after a specific update:
  2. 2Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates
  3. 3Find the most recent update and click Uninstall
  4. 4If you can't access Settings due to flickering:
  5. 5Boot into Safe Mode: hold Shift while clicking Restart
  6. 6Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Uninstall updates
  7. 7After uninstalling, pause updates for 7 days to prevent re-installation
  8. 8Check for a newer update that may fix the issue before re-enabling updates
