How to Fix Computer Freezing and Hanging

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Win+Tab opens Task View but can't create new desktops
  • Ctrl+Win+D does nothing — no new desktop created
  • Apps randomly move between virtual desktops
  • Virtual desktop names reset after restart
  • Switching desktops causes screen to flicker or go black briefly
  • Task View shows but virtual desktop thumbnails are missing
  • Third virtual desktop or beyond won't stay open

Common Causes

  • Task View or virtual desktop components corrupted
  • Keyboard shortcuts conflicting with third-party apps (GPU overlays, etc.)
  • Display driver issue causing rendering problems during desktop switch
  • Shell Experience Host not functioning properly
  • Virtual desktop state saved in corrupted registry keys
  • Too many desktops causing memory pressure
  • Accessibility or input settings overriding keyboard shortcuts

Solutions

Solution 1: Reset Virtual Desktop State

  1. 1Close all virtual desktops except Desktop 1:
  2. 2Win+Tab → hover over extra desktops → click X to close them
  3. 3This moves all windows back to Desktop 1
  4. 4Now create new desktops fresh with Ctrl+Win+D
  5. 5If the issue was a corrupted desktop state, starting fresh resolves it
  6. 6Custom desktop names are stored in the registry and persist across reboots (Win 11)

Solution 2: Fix Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working

  1. 1Virtual desktop shortcuts:
  2. 2Ctrl+Win+D: new desktop | Ctrl+Win+Left/Right: switch | Ctrl+Win+F4: close desktop
  3. 3If not working: check for conflicting apps
  4. 4NVIDIA GeForce Experience, Discord, OBS, and other apps can capture these shortcuts
  5. 5Temporarily close overlay apps and test
  6. 6Check Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → make sure Sticky Keys isn't interfering
  7. 7Also check: Settings → System → Multitasking → Virtual desktops settings

Solution 3: Fix Apps Moving Between Desktops

  1. 1Some apps are set to appear on all desktops:
  2. 2Win+Tab → right-click the app → "Show this window on all desktops" (uncheck it)
  3. 3Or: "Show windows from this app on all desktops" (uncheck it)
  4. 4System tray apps (like Spotify mini-player) may auto-appear on all desktops
  5. 5If apps keep jumping: the app may be restarting and opening on the active desktop
  6. 6Check Settings → System → Multitasking → "Show open windows" → Only the desktop I'm using

Solution 4: Repair Task View Component

  1. 1Open PowerShell as Administrator
  2. 2Re-register Shell Experience Host:
  3. 3Get-AppxPackage *ShellExperienceHost* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
  4. 4Also run sfc /scannow to repair any system file corruption
  5. 5Restart the computer
  6. 6If Task View button is missing from taskbar: right-click taskbar → Show Task View button
