How to Fix Windows Not Requiring Password After Sleep or Wake on Windows

PC doesn't ask for password after waking from sleep? Anyone can access your computer without signing in? Fix sleep/wake sign-in security settings.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Computer wakes from sleep without asking for password
  • Lock screen appears but no password required — goes straight to desktop
  • Sign-in requirement works after restart but not after sleep
  • Password prompt stopped appearing after Windows Update
  • Different behavior when on battery vs. plugged in
  • Windows Hello face/fingerprint not prompting on wake

Common Causes

  • Sign-in options set to "Never" require password after sleep
  • Power settings configured to not require password on wake
  • Group Policy overriding sign-in requirements
  • Windows Hello PIN configured but not enforced on wake
  • Modern Standby (S0) not triggering lock properly
  • Third-party power management software disabling lock

Solutions

Solution 1: Configure Sign-In After Sleep

  1. 1Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options
  2. 2Under "If you've been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again?"
  3. 3Change from "Never" to "When PC wakes up from sleep"
  4. 4This is the primary setting that controls post-sleep authentication
  5. 5Windows 10: same location but labeled slightly differently
  6. 6After changing: test by putting PC to sleep → wake → should prompt for sign-in

Solution 2: Fix via Power Options

  1. 1Some older settings still affect wake behavior:
  2. 2Control Panel → Power Options → click "Change plan settings" for your active plan
  3. 3Click "Change advanced power settings"
  4. 4Expand "Require a password on wakeup" (if present)
  5. 5Set both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to "Yes"
  6. 6Click Apply → OK
  7. 7If this option is missing: it's controlled by the Settings app instead
  8. 8Also: Control Panel → Power Options → "Require a password on wakeup" (left side)

Solution 3: Fix via Registry and Group Policy

  1. 1If Settings option is grayed out or not working:
  2. 2Regedit → HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Power\PowerSettings
  3. 3Look for subkeys related to "Require a password" — delete policy overrides
  4. 4Or: gpedit.msc → Computer Configuration → Admin Templates
  5. 5→ System → Power Management → Sleep Settings
  6. 6"Require a password when a computer wakes (on battery)" → Enabled
  7. 7"Require a password when a computer wakes (plugged in)" → Enabled
  8. 8Run: gpupdate /force → restart PC
