Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • PC won't enter sleep mode when lid is closed
  • Computer wakes up seconds after going to sleep
  • Sleep option missing from power menu
  • PC goes to sleep but won't wake up (black screen)

  • Wake timers from scheduled tasks or updates
  • USB device sending wake signal
  • Network adapter set to wake the computer

Solutions

Solution 1: Check What's Waking Your PC

  1. 1Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. 2Run: powercfg /waketimers to see scheduled wake events
  3. 3Run: powercfg /lastwake to see what woke the PC last time
  4. 4Run: powercfg /devicequery wake_armed to see devices that can wake
  5. 5Disable wake for unnecessary devices (see next solution)

Solution 2: Disable Wake from USB and Network

  1. 1Open Device Manager
  2. 2Expand "Network adapters"
  3. 3Right-click your adapter > Properties > Power Management
  4. 4Uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer"
  5. 5Do the same for "Mice and other pointing devices"
  6. 6And "Keyboards" if random wakes continue

Solution 3: Fix Missing Sleep Option

  1. 1Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. 2Run: powercfg /availablesleepstates
  3. 3If sleep is not listed, run: powercfg /hibernate off then powercfg /hibernate on
  4. 4Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
  5. 5Click "Change settings that are currently unavailable"
  6. 6Check "Sleep" under Shutdown settings
  7. 7Click Save changes
