How to Fix Laptop Lid Close Action Not Working — Won't Sleep or Wrong Action on Windows

Closing laptop lid doesn't put it to sleep, does nothing, or triggers wrong action? Fix lid close behavior on Windows.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Closing lid does nothing — laptop stays awake
  • Closing lid shuts down instead of sleeping
  • Laptop sleeps when lid closed but wakes immediately
  • External monitor goes off when lid is closed (should stay on)
  • Lid close action changed after a Windows Update
  • Different behavior on battery vs plugged in

Common Causes

  • Power plan lid close action misconfigured
  • External display or dock overriding lid behavior
  • Third-party power management software interfering
  • Modern Standby (S0) not sleeping properly
  • Power plan corrupted or not applying correctly

Solutions

Solution 1: Configure Lid Close Action

  1. 1Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Power Options
  2. 2Click "Choose what closing the lid does" (left sidebar)
  3. 3Under "When I close the lid":
  4. 4Set separately for "On battery" and "Plugged in"
  5. 5Options: Do nothing, Sleep, Hibernate, Shut down
  6. 6Click "Save changes"
  7. 7For external monitor use: set "Plugged in" to "Do nothing"

Solution 2: Fix Lid Close Not Sleeping

  1. 1If set to Sleep but laptop doesn't sleep:
  2. 2Check if something prevents sleep: powercfg /requests
  3. 3Common blockers: media players, downloads, USB devices
  4. 4CMD: powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS "processname.exe" SYSTEM
  5. 5Also check: Device Manager → Network adapters → your adapter
  6. 6Properties → Power Management → uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer"

Solution 3: Fix with External Monitor

  1. 1When using external monitor + closed lid:
  2. 2Set lid close to "Do nothing" when plugged in
  3. 3Settings → System → Display → verify external monitor is detected
  4. 4Set external monitor as primary: Display settings → select it → "Make this my main display"
  5. 5If external display turns off when lid closes:
  6. 6Update GPU driver — this handles display switching on lid events
  7. 7Try: connect external display → close lid → wake with keyboard/mouse
