How to Fix Closing Laptop Lid Doesn't Trigger Sleep on Windows

Laptop not sleeping when you close the lid, screen staying on, or laptop overheating in a bag? Fix lid close action settings.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Closing the lid does nothing — laptop stays running
  • Laptop overheats in bag because it didn't sleep
  • Screen turns off when lid closes but PC stays awake
  • Lid close sleeps on battery but not when plugged in
  • Laptop wakes up immediately after closing lid
  • Lid close used to work but stopped after update

Common Causes

  • Lid close action set to "Do nothing" in power settings
  • Different actions configured for battery vs plugged in
  • External display connected overriding lid behavior
  • Wake timer or device waking the laptop immediately
  • Third-party software preventing sleep
  • Power plan corrupted or set to High Performance

Solutions

Solution 1: Set Lid Close Action

  1. 1Open Control Panel > Power Options
  2. 2Click "Choose what closing the lid does"
  3. 3Under "When I close the lid":
  4. 4Set "On battery" to "Sleep"
  5. 5Set "Plugged in" to "Sleep" (or "Hibernate" for longer away times)
  6. 6Click Save changes

Solution 2: Fix External Monitor Override

  1. 1When an external monitor is connected: Windows may keep running with lid closed
  2. 2This is by design — so you can use the external display
  3. 3If you want it to sleep even with a monitor: set lid close to Sleep (above)
  4. 4Some laptops have BIOS settings for "Lid close behavior"
  5. 5Check: BIOS > Power or Advanced settings
  6. 6Make sure the lid sensor isn't physically stuck (rare but possible)

Solution 3: Prevent Immediate Wake After Sleep

  1. 1If laptop sleeps but instantly wakes when lid closes:
  2. 2Open Command Prompt as Admin
  3. 3Run: powercfg -devicequery wake_armed (lists wake devices)
  4. 4Run: powercfg -lastwake (shows what woke it last)
  5. 5Disable wake for USB devices and network adapters in Device Manager
  6. 6Right-click device > Properties > Power Management > uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer"
