How to Fix Screen Timeout or Auto-Lock Not Working on Windows

Screen won't turn off after inactivity, computer never locks automatically, or display timeout settings being ignored? Fix power plan screen timeout and auto-lock issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • •Screen stays on indefinitely despite timeout setting
  • •Computer never auto-locks when you walk away
  • •Display turns off but immediately wakes back up
  • •Screen timeout works on battery but not when plugged in
  • •Lock screen timeout setting grayed out
  • •Monitor stays on overnight wasting power

Common Causes

  • âš Application preventing sleep/screen off (media player, presentation mode)
  • âš Power plan settings overridden or corrupted
  • âš USB device sending wake signals (mouse, keyboard)
  • âš Background process requesting system to stay awake
  • âš Dynamic lock not configured for auto-lock
  • âš Group Policy overriding screen timeout settings

Solutions

Solution 1: Configure Screen Timeout Properly

  1. 1Go to Settings > System > Power & battery (Win11) or Power & sleep (Win10)
  2. 2Set "Turn off my screen after" to your preferred time (e.g., 5 minutes)
  3. 3Set for both "On battery" and "When plugged in"
  4. 4Also check: Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > "If you've been away" > set to lock
  5. 5For more control: Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings

Solution 2: Find What Is Keeping Screen On

  1. 1Open Admin CMD
  2. 2Run: powercfg /requests
  3. 3This shows which processes are preventing sleep/screen off
  4. 4Common culprits: media players, video calls, presentation mode
  5. 5Close the identified application or disable its power request
  6. 6Run powercfg /requests again to confirm it is cleared

Solution 3: Fix Display Waking Immediately

  1. 1If the screen turns off then immediately comes back on:
  2. 2Open Device Manager > Mice > your mouse > Properties > Power Management
  3. 3Uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer"
  4. 4Do the same for keyboards and network adapters
  5. 5Also check: powercfg /waketimers to see scheduled wake events
  6. 6Disable unnecessary wake timers in Power Options > Advanced > Sleep > Allow wake timers
