How to Fix Fix Power Button Not Working on Windows on Windows

Power button doesn't shut down or sleep your PC? Pressing the power button does nothing? Power button action changed or unresponsive? Fix power button behavior on Windows 10 and 11.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Pressing the power button does absolutely nothing
  • Power button puts PC to sleep instead of shutting down (or vice versa)
  • Power button action changed after a Windows Update
  • Laptop power button works for turning on but not for shutdown
  • Power button on keyboard or case stopped responding
  • Power options show no configurable power button settings

Common Causes

  • Power button action set to "Do nothing" in Power Options
  • Power plan settings overriding the physical button behavior
  • ACPI driver issues preventing power button signal from reaching Windows
  • Group Policy or third-party power management tool changed the setting
  • Hardware issue with the physical power button or its connection
  • Fast Startup interfering with power button behavior on some hardware

Solutions

Solution 1: Configure Power Button Action in Settings

  1. 1Open Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Power Options
  2. 2Click "Choose what the power buttons do" in the left sidebar
  3. 3Under "When I press the power button":
  4. 4Set "On battery" to your preference (Sleep, Shut down, Hibernate, etc.)
  5. 5Set "Plugged in" to your preference
  6. 6Click "Save changes"
  7. 7If the dropdown is greyed out: click "Change settings that are currently unavailable" at the top
  8. 8You may need administrator privileges for this change

Solution 2: Fix Power Button via Registry

  1. 1If the Control Panel setting doesn't work:
  2. 2Open Registry Editor (regedit) as Administrator
  3. 3Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
  4. 4Look for "shutdownwithoutlogon" — set to 1 to allow shutdown
  5. 5Also check: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power
  6. 6Look for "HiberbootEnabled" — set to 0 to disable Fast Startup
  7. 7Restart the computer and test the power button
  8. 8If still not working: the issue may be hardware-related

Solution 3: Fix ACPI and Hardware Issues

  1. 1Open Device Manager → System devices
  2. 2Find "ACPI Power Button" or "ACPI Lid" (for laptops)
  3. 3Right-click → Uninstall device → Restart the PC
  4. 4Windows will reinstall the ACPI driver automatically
  5. 5Also try: Device Manager → Keyboards → check for power button device
  6. 6Run Power Troubleshooter: Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Power
  7. 7If none of these work: the physical power button may be damaged
  8. 8For desktops: check the front panel header cable connection to the motherboard
  9. 9For laptops: contact the manufacturer for hardware service
