How to Fix Offline Files Sync Failed — Network Files Not Syncing on Windows

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Sync Center shows "Sync failed" for network files
  • Offline files not updating when reconnected to network
  • Sync conflicts showing duplicate versions of files
  • "There is a problem accessing the offline files folder" error
  • Offline files available but changes not syncing back
  • Sync Center stuck on "Syncing" indefinitely

Common Causes

  • Offline Files cache corrupted
  • Network path changed or server renamed
  • Sync conflicts from editing same file on multiple devices
  • Offline Files feature disabled
  • Insufficient local disk space for offline cache
  • Network credentials expired or changed

Solutions

Solution 1: Force Sync

  1. 1Open Sync Center: Control Panel → Sync Center
  2. 2Click "Sync All" to force a complete sync
  3. 3If specific partnerships fail: click on it → "Sync"
  4. 4Check for sync conflicts: Sync Center → "View sync conflicts"
  5. 5Resolve conflicts by choosing which version to keep
  6. 6If sync is stuck: restart the "Offline Files" service

Solution 2: Reset Offline Files Cache

  1. 1If sync is completely broken:
  2. 2Open Registry Editor: Win+R → regedit
  3. 3Navigate to: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters
  4. 4Create DWORD: "FormatDatabase" = 1
  5. 5Restart the PC
  6. 6WARNING: this deletes ALL cached offline files locally
  7. 7Files on the server are NOT affected
  8. 8After restart: files will re-sync from the server

Solution 3: Enable Offline Files

  1. 1Control Panel → Sync Center → "Manage offline files"
  2. 2Click "Enable offline files" if disabled
  3. 3Restart PC
  4. 4To make a folder available offline:
  5. 5Right-click network folder → "Always available offline"
  6. 6Windows will cache the folder for offline access
  7. 7Changes sync automatically when reconnected
