Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • OneDrive shows "Processing changes" indefinitely
  • Sync icon keeps spinning but files don't upload
  • Files marked with red X — sync failed
  • OneDrive says "Sync pending" but never starts
  • Some files sync but others are stuck
  • OneDrive uses excessive CPU or bandwidth during sync

Common Causes

  • File name or path too long (exceeds 400 characters)
  • File locked by another application preventing sync
  • OneDrive cache or database corrupted
  • Insufficient cloud storage space in OneDrive account
  • Proxy or firewall blocking OneDrive sync endpoints
  • Too many files being synced simultaneously (throttling)

Solutions

Solution 1: Reset OneDrive Sync

  1. 1Press Win+R and paste this command:
  2. 2%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
  3. 3OneDrive icon will disappear from the taskbar
  4. 4Wait 2-3 minutes — it should restart automatically
  5. 5If it doesn't restart: press Win+R and run:
  6. 6%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe
  7. 7OneDrive will rebuild its sync database
  8. 8This fixes most sync stuck issues

Solution 2: Fix Problem Files

  1. 1Right-click the OneDrive icon in taskbar → "View sync problems"
  2. 2This shows which specific files are failing
  3. 3Common issues and fixes:
  4. 4File name too long → rename to a shorter name
  5. 5File in use → close the application using it, then sync
  6. 6File too large → OneDrive limit is 250GB per file
  7. 7Invalid characters (# % &) → rename the file
  8. 8Path too long → move the file to a shorter folder path
  9. 9After fixing: right-click OneDrive → "Sync now"

Solution 3: Unlink and Relink OneDrive Account

  1. 1Right-click OneDrive icon → Settings → Account tab
  2. 2Click "Unlink this PC"
  3. 3This stops syncing but doesn't delete files
  4. 4Close OneDrive completely
  5. 5Reopen OneDrive and sign in again
  6. 6Choose which folders to sync
  7. 7OneDrive will re-scan and sync from scratch
  8. 8This fixes corrupted sync state that /reset didn't resolve
