Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix No Internet Connection

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • OneDrive icon shows red X or yellow warning triangle
  • Files stuck in "Sync pending" state
  • "Your OneDrive isn't connected" error message
  • Conflicted copies appearing with "(1)" in filename
  • Files On-Demand not downloading when clicked
  • OneDrive using excessive CPU or bandwidth during sync

Common Causes

  • OneDrive account disconnected or authentication expired
  • File name or path too long (>400 characters)
  • Storage quota exceeded on OneDrive cloud
  • Conflicting files being edited on multiple devices
  • Network issues or firewall blocking OneDrive servers
  • Corrupted OneDrive cache or database

Solutions

Solution 1: Reset OneDrive Sync

  1. 1Press Win + R and run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
  2. 2Wait 1-2 minutes — the OneDrive icon should disappear then reappear in the system tray
  3. 3If it doesn't reappear: run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe
  4. 4Sign back in if prompted
  5. 5OneDrive will re-scan all files (may take time depending on file count)
  6. 6This resets the sync engine without deleting any files

Solution 2: Fix Specific Sync Errors

  1. 1Click the OneDrive icon in the system tray > click the error banner
  2. 2Common fixes by error type:
  3. 3File name too long: rename the file to shorten the full path
  4. 4Storage full: delete files from OneDrive or upgrade storage plan
  5. 5File in use: close all applications using the file, then retry sync
  6. 6Conflicted copy: open both versions, keep the correct one, delete the duplicate

Solution 3: Reinstall OneDrive

  1. 1If reset doesn't fix sync: uninstall OneDrive completely
  2. 2Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft OneDrive > Uninstall
  3. 3Download fresh from: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/onedrive/download
  4. 4Install and sign in with your Microsoft account
  5. 5Choose which folders to sync
  6. 6Files will re-download from the cloud (nothing is lost)
