How to Fix Windows Location Services Not Working on Windows

Windows can't determine your location, weather showing wrong city, or location-based features not working? Fix GPS, WiFi-based location, and privacy settings.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Weather app showing wrong location
  • Maps app says "Can't determine your location"
  • Find My Device not working
  • Night Light sunset/sunrise schedule not functioning
  • Location icon never appears in taskbar
  • "Location couldn't be determined" error in apps

Common Causes

  • Location services disabled in privacy settings
  • Individual app location permissions denied
  • WiFi scanning disabled (needed for WiFi-based location)
  • No GPS hardware (most desktops lack GPS)
  • VPN changing your apparent location
  • Location service misconfigured after Windows Update

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Location Services

  1. 1Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Location
  2. 2Turn ON "Location services" at the top
  3. 3Turn ON "Let apps access your location"
  4. 4Scroll down and enable location for specific apps (Weather, Maps)
  5. 5Turn ON "Let desktop apps access your location" at the bottom
  6. 6A location icon should appear in the taskbar when apps access location

Solution 2: Improve Location Accuracy

  1. 1Windows uses WiFi networks to determine location (not GPS on most PCs)
  2. 2Ensure WiFi is ON even if using Ethernet — WiFi scanning helps location
  3. 3Go to Settings > Network & internet > WiFi > random hardware addresses: OFF
  4. 4Disconnect from VPN when using location-dependent features
  5. 5For desktops without WiFi: location will be approximate based on IP address
  6. 6Install a USB GPS receiver for precise location (rarely needed)

Solution 3: Fix Location for Specific Apps

  1. 1Weather app: open Weather > click location icon > set your city manually
  2. 2Maps app: Settings > Privacy > Location > ensure Maps is allowed
  3. 3Night Light: needs location for sunset/sunrise — set manually as backup
  4. 4Settings > System > Display > Night light settings > set hours manually
  5. 5Find My Device: Settings > Privacy > Find my device > turn ON
  6. 6Requires Microsoft account sign-in and location services enabled
