How to Fix Night Mode / Blue Light Filter Stuck on Windows

Windows Night Light stuck on, can't turn off the orange/warm tint, or Night Light settings grayed out? Fix persistent blue light filter issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Screen has an orange/warm tint that won't go away
  • Night Light toggle is on but can't be turned off
  • Night Light turns itself on during the day
  • Night Light settings grayed out
  • Screen color returns to normal briefly then goes warm again
  • Night Light schedule seems wrong (wrong sunrise/sunset times)

Common Causes

  • Night Light schedule set incorrectly
  • Location services not working (sunset/sunrise schedule relies on location)
  • Display driver not supporting Night Light properly
  • Night Light registry settings corrupted
  • Third-party blue light filter conflicting (f.lux)
  • Windows Update reset Night Light settings

Solutions

Solution 1: Reset Night Light Settings

  1. 1Go to Settings > System > Display > Night light
  2. 2Turn OFF Night Light toggle
  3. 3If toggle is grayed out: open Registry Editor
  4. 4Navigate to: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\DefaultAccount\Current
  5. 5Delete the folder: default$windows.data.bluelightreduction.bluelightreductionstate
  6. 6Also delete: default$windows.data.bluelightreduction.settings
  7. 7Restart your computer — Night Light resets to default

Solution 2: Fix Night Light Schedule

  1. 1Go to Settings > System > Display > Night light settings
  2. 2Change from "Sunset to sunrise" to "Set hours"
  3. 3Set specific hours (e.g., 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM)
  4. 4This avoids relying on location services
  5. 5Adjust "Strength" slider — lower values give less orange tint
  6. 6If location is needed: ensure Location Services are ON in Settings > Privacy > Location

Solution 3: Fix Display Driver Compatibility

  1. 1Night Light requires WDDM 2.0+ display driver
  2. 2If settings are grayed out: your driver may be too old
  3. 3Open Device Manager > Display adapters
  4. 4Right-click GPU > Update driver > Search automatically
  5. 5Or download the latest driver from Intel/NVIDIA/AMD website
  6. 6If using a very old GPU: Night Light may not be supported — use f.lux as an alternative
