How to Fix Fix Windows Time Zone Keeps Changing or Wrong Time on Windows

Windows clock showing wrong time? Time zone keeps changing automatically? Clock resets after every reboot? Fix time zone and Windows Time Service issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Clock shows wrong time after every restart
  • Time zone changes to a different region automatically
  • "Set time zone automatically" toggles itself on/off
  • Time is correct for a while then shifts by hours
  • Dual-boot systems always have wrong time in Windows
  • Time sync fails with "An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing"

Common Causes

  • CMOS/BIOS battery (CR2032) is dead — clock resets on power loss
  • Windows Time Service (w32time) not running or misconfigured
  • Dual-boot with Linux causing UTC vs local time conflict
  • "Set time zone automatically" using incorrect location data
  • Group Policy or third-party software overriding time zone settings
  • NTP server unreachable or blocked by firewall

Solutions

Solution 1: Fix Time Zone and Sync Settings

  1. 1Open Settings → Time & Language → Date & Time
  2. 2Toggle off "Set time zone automatically" if it keeps choosing wrong zone
  3. 3Manually select your correct time zone from the dropdown
  4. 4Toggle on "Set time automatically"
  5. 5Click "Sync now" under "Additional settings"
  6. 6If sync fails: open CMD as Admin
  7. 7w32tm /resync /force
  8. 8If still wrong, check BIOS time — restart and enter BIOS/UEFI to verify

Solution 2: Fix Windows Time Service

  1. 1Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. 2Stop the service: net stop w32time
  3. 3Unregister: w32tm /unregister
  4. 4Re-register: w32tm /register
  5. 5Start the service: net start w32time
  6. 6Set NTP server: w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"time.windows.com" /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update
  7. 7Force sync: w32tm /resync /force
  8. 8Open Services.msc → set "Windows Time" to Automatic startup

Solution 3: Fix Dual-Boot Time and CMOS Battery

  1. 1For dual-boot with Linux causing time issues:
  2. 2In Windows: open regedit → HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation
  3. 3Create DWORD "RealTimeIsUniversal" = 1
  4. 4This tells Windows to use UTC like Linux does
  5. 5If clock resets to completely wrong time after shutdown:
  6. 6The CMOS battery (CR2032) on the motherboard is likely dead
  7. 7Replace the battery — it's a small coin cell on the motherboard
  8. 8After replacement: set correct time in BIOS and in Windows
