How to Fix File History Not Backing Up on Windows

File History stopped backing up files? Backup drive not recognized? File History shows errors or hasn't run in days? Can't restore files from File History? Backup stuck on "Copying files"? Fix Windows File History backup issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • File History status shows "File History is off" despite being configured
  • Last backup date is days or weeks old
  • Error message: "File History doesn't recognize this drive"
  • Backup starts but gets stuck on "Copying files..."
  • File History settings page shows error status
  • Can't restore files — "No previous versions available"

Common Causes

  • Backup drive disconnected, full, or failing
  • File History service not running
  • File History configuration database corrupted
  • Backup drive file system errors
  • Too many files changed since last backup (overwhelms queue)
  • Network backup location unreachable

Solutions

Solution 1: Fix File History Drive and Service

  1. 1Check the backup drive:
  2. 2Ensure the external/network drive is connected and accessible
  3. 3Open File Explorer → check if the backup drive appears
  4. 4Check drive space: File History needs free space on backup drive
  5. 5Start the File History service:
  6. 6services.msc → "File History Service" → Automatic → Start
  7. 7Also ensure: "Windows Search" service is running (needed for indexing)
  8. 8Re-select the backup drive:
  9. 9Settings → Update & Security → Backup (Win10)
  10. 10Or: Control Panel → File History
  11. 11Click "Select drive" → choose your backup drive
  12. 12Toggle File History ON
  13. 13Click "Run now" to force an immediate backup

Solution 2: Reset File History Configuration

  1. 1If File History config is corrupted:
  2. 2Turn off File History first
  3. 3Delete configuration files:
  4. 4Navigate to: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration
  5. 5Delete all files in this folder
  6. 6Also check the backup drive:
  7. 7Open the backup drive → look for "FileHistory" folder
  8. 8Inside: find the Configuration folder
  9. 9Delete Config1.xml and Config2.xml
  10. 10Re-enable File History:
  11. 11Settings or Control Panel → File History → Turn on
  12. 12Select the backup drive again
  13. 13File History will create fresh configuration
  14. 14First backup will be a full backup (may take hours)

Solution 3: Fix Drive Errors and Network Backup

  1. 1If backup drive has file system errors:
  2. 2Open CMD as Admin:
  3. 3chkdsk D: /f (replace D: with your backup drive letter)
  4. 4This fixes file system errors on the backup drive
  5. 5For network backup locations:
  6. 6Ensure the network share is accessible: \\SERVER\ShareName
  7. 7Check credentials: Control Panel → Credential Manager
  8. 8Verify network share permissions allow write access
  9. 9If backup is stuck on "Copying files":
  10. 10Check for very large files being backed up
  11. 11Exclude large folders that change frequently:
  12. 12File History → Advanced settings → Exclude folders
  13. 13Add folders like Downloads, game libraries, VMs
  14. 14This speeds up backup and prevents timeouts
  15. 15Consider switching to Windows Backup (Settings → Accounts → Windows backup)
