Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • "Backup failed" or "Backup did not complete successfully"
  • File History stuck on "Files are waiting to be backed up"
  • System image backup fails with error 0x80780119
  • Backup drive not recognized by Windows Backup
  • Backup starts but never finishes
  • Old backups can't be restored

Common Causes

  • Backup drive full or disconnected
  • Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) service failing
  • File History database corrupted
  • Insufficient space on backup destination
  • System protection disabled for backup drive
  • Antivirus blocking backup operations

Solutions

Solution 1: Reset File History

  1. 1Go to Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Backup options
  2. 2Click "Stop using this drive" under File History
  3. 3Navigate to %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory
  4. 4Delete the "Configuration" folder
  5. 5Go back to Backup settings and re-add your backup drive
  6. 6File History will start fresh

Solution 2: Fix Volume Shadow Copy Service

  1. 1Press Windows + R, type services.msc
  2. 2Find "Volume Shadow Copy" — set to Manual, click Start
  3. 3Find "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" — set to Manual
  4. 4Open Command Prompt as Admin
  5. 5Run: vssadmin list writers (check for errors)
  6. 6If writers are in error state: restart the corresponding services

Solution 3: Fix System Image Backup

  1. 1Ensure the backup drive has at least 40GB free
  2. 2Open Disk Management and verify the backup drive is healthy
  3. 3If error 0x80780119: the system partition is too small
  4. 4Use Disk Cleanup to free space on the system partition
  5. 5Delete old system image backups from the backup drive
  6. 6Folder: WindowsImageBackup — delete old ones, keep only the latest
