  • Camera app crashes immediately upon opening
  • Camera works in other apps but not the built-in Camera app

  • Webcam driver corrupted or incompatible after update
  • Camera app itself is corrupted and needs reset
  • Another application has exclusive lock on the camera device
  • Antivirus or security software blocking camera access
  • Physical camera toggle switch or keyboard shortcut turned camera off

Solutions

Solution 1: Check Camera Privacy Settings

  1. 1Open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera
  2. 2Ensure "Camera access" toggle is On
  3. 3Ensure "Let apps access your camera" toggle is On
  4. 4Scroll down and verify "Camera" app has access enabled
  5. 5Also check "Let desktop apps access your camera" is On
  6. 6If any toggles were off, turn them on and restart Camera app
  7. 7On some devices, check for a physical camera shutter or privacy switch

Solution 2: Reset and Repair Camera App

  1. 1Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps
  2. 2Search for "Camera"
  3. 3Click the three dots → Advanced options
  4. 4First try "Repair" — this fixes issues without losing data

  6. 6If still not working, reinstall via PowerShell as Administrator:
  7. 7Get-AppxPackage *WindowsCamera* | Remove-AppxPackage

Solution 3: Fix Camera Driver

  3. 3Right-click your camera → Update driver → Search automatically
  4. 4If already up to date, try: Uninstall device → check "Delete driver software"
  5. 5Click Action → Scan for hardware changes to reinstall
  6. 6If the camera is not listed at all:
  7. 7Check BIOS/UEFI for a camera enable/disable setting
